Gotta love him!
1010 WINS) (NEW YORK) A day after claiming he didn't see anyone smoking at a fancy Wall Street soiree, Mayor Michael Bloomberg changed his wording Tuesday, saying he didn't 'remember' seeing anyone light up at the event, in violation of the city's indoor smoking ban.
'The bottom line is I don't really remember anybody smoking,' Bloomberg said during an interview on WLIB AM radio. 'Most people weren't, and if there were some people in the corner smoking, they were smoking. What do you want me to do, call the cops? I mean, come on.'
Last year the mayor pushed through a smoking ban in most public places, including bars and restaurants. Cigar smoking at the hotel ballroom black-tie affair by the current and former Wall Street executives would have been a violation of that law. The state has a similar prohibition.
In the past, Bloomberg, a former smoker, has exhorted citizens to call the city's 311 telephone complaint hot line to report smokers who ignore the ban.
Attendees at an exclusive Wall Street party for the Kappa Beta Phi society last month at the St. Regis Hotel said they puffed away on cigars in the mayor's presence while he kept mum.
Some of the 130 people at the event said as many as 50 lit up. The mayor's office disputes that figure, saying hotel staff reported it was only a handful.
On Monday, when asked if he saw any smokers at the party, Bloomberg said: 'I didn't see anybody smoking when I was there. I arrived late. I stayed for about an hour and a half, and it very well could have been.'
Bloomberg's response was the same Monday and Tuesday, a mayoral spokesman said.
'The mayor gave the same answer both times,' spokesman Ed Skyler said. 'Searching for a hidden meaning is more than splitting hairs, it's splitting atoms, and the only thing it shows is to what lengths the media will go to keep a story alive.'
The health department said it will send an inspector to the hotel to investigate a complaint about smoking.
I GUESS IF YOUR PART OF HIS ELITE GROUP THEN YOU CAN !
