Government lesson/read aloud - 5th grade - TEACHERS pls read :)

Ladies,

Posted last week, but got more info now... I have to teach a 5th grade demo lesson on government.... what a broad topic!! I also need to show that it is an enriched lesson....


I was thinking of maybe breaking the class into 3 groups, each of which would have a different amendment to focus on and then giving the kids a scenario where there could be pros/cons to the amendment and having them come up with reasons why or why not the amendment would e helpful in this situation....

it's a 40 minute lesson.... is that too much? ANY ideas would be appreciated!!

I don't think it's too much at all. It sounds like a great activity to get the kids involved and to learn about what rights they have in this country!

Not very familiar w/ the age level, but I'm wondering what they know of the amendments at this point. If this is an intro first lesson, it may be too much to grasp. Also what handouts/hands on will you use?

I found that anytime I arrange things in a game format it gets the kids more into it & also to listen more (b/c I'll take points away for talking, etc.)

We do spelling/math baseball, jeopardy for many subjects (esp. to review) and spelling free toss.

I do like the team approach you suggested.

I'd start the lesson off w/ a 'lecture' you leading, then break up into groups, etc. & then some type of close activity (to see if they 'got' it).

When do you have to do this?

Do you teach now?

thanks for the game ideas.... i hate the demo lesson concept cause you really have no idea what their previous knowledge is....

it's in a week and a half...
