hey guys sorry a little off topic. I want to be a speech language pathologist but having a very hard time getting in to grad school. I love working with children with autism, so i figured i should get my special ed masters and then my TSHH/TSSLD. Did anyone do this? Does anyone know if it is worth it, basically is it still a good career opportunity and financially rewarding? I know either way i go i would be personally rewarded just working with the children, so now i need to know about the other important aspects. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. I am so lost don't know if i should keep trying for SLP, already applied 3X and time is wasting i want to finish grad school by my wedding lol!! Either way I know I like the speech aspect

Re: GRAD SCHOOL HELP TSSH/SPEECH PATHOLOGY
i don't know myself but i just asked my sister who is doing the same thing. she recommends go to www.asha.com or asha.org and look up graduate schools in the search engine and they will list every state and every grad school w/in those states that has the program ... so you'll know where's feasible. she says that once you're done w/ speech you'll only need one more semester to get the teaching certificates.??? She thinks... but you can contact schools to find out...
she says there are some schools on long island that have the program(adelphi, hofstra, cw post)
she says don't give up.. its worth every minute.

Re: GRAD SCHOOL HELP TSSH/SPEECH PATHOLOGY
i'm a speech therapist at a public school. i would keep trying to get in to grad school for speech. it really is a great feild with soo many work setting options. you can work with kids, older people, in a hospital, a school, etc... also, its not a 'trendy' field, so there really is a need for it, so a job would be so easy to come by once you're finished. i actually didn't get accepted to my first choice grad school at first, and then i waited and ended up being selected off their waiting list. maybe you could contact schools about doing something like that?? i would definitely keep trying though- its worth it!

i'm finishing my masters in speech language pathology in may --- definitely don't give up! its a long, hard road...but its really worth it.
when reapplying.... have you made any changes? or are you just reapplying each semester?
i think its important to do whatever you can to show the grad schools that you're really dedicated... some possible things to do are... 1) retake the GREs if you didnt do so well 2) retake classes (speech-related) that you may not have done well in 3) try to work in a related field in the meantime (like subbing at a school where you can work with kids with autism or volunteering somewhere speech-related)
HTH and good luck

Re: GRAD SCHOOL HELP TSSH/SPEECH PATHOLOGY
Hello! I actually just started grad school for SLP up at Northeastern University in Boston. I know it's really tough and one thing they look for is experience. They recommended to us if we did not get in to work in the field or similar field and get experience. You can also work for NYC public school and they will help you pay for your grad school. I know St. Johns has a program that is affiliated with the NYC schools. It may not be an ideal area but it'll help you get your foot in the door. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to FM me.
