My daughter's wedding is mid-October and my 87 year old MIL still hasn't gotten a dress yet! We are having a hard time because she wants it to be slightly below her knees and she wants it to cover her arms (either long sleeves or a light jacket). She doesn't want to spend too much more than $200-$250. We've looked at Macy's, Lord & Taylors, Bloomingdales, Penneys. Can anyone give me some other ideas where to shop?

Re: grandmother of bride dress
My grandmother found something very similar to what you are describing at Lord and Taylor's, I know you said you checked there already, but I'm sure if you try other department stores you'll be able to find something.
Also, as hectic as it is, the Macy's at Herald Square has the largest dress selection of any store I've ever seen. It may be worth it if you're in the city for RK to go there too.

Re: grandmother of bride dress
Believe it or not, we found a nice outfit for my grandma in Dress Barn. I think she got the outfit for my sister's wedding in Macy's.
Both times, we bought a few different outfits and returned the ones she didn't like. That way she could try them on at home.

You might find something at Estelle's--my grandma got a dress there a few years back similar to what you asked for....

Re: grandmother of bride dress
We looked all over for my grandmother and actually found her an AMAZING suit at Dress Barn Woman. We looked at all these higher end stores and bridal shops and couldnt find anything, I was seriously amazed that dress barn had so many nice evening outfits

Re: grandmother of bride dress
When I was shopping around for that sort of dress for my MIL, I found that different store locations had very different stock of dresses... So I'd say try another location of Macy's & Penney's again...

Re: grandmother of bride dress
My grandmother is 80 years old and did not want to spend a lot of money on her outfit for the wedding. We ended up finding a long satin skirt and a formal jacket/shell set at Macy's. I know Ann Taylor's Celebrations collection had tea-length dresses and you can find a coordinating jacket

Re: grandmother of bride dress
Thanks to all of you for your advice. Going into the city wouldn't be an option for her, but I'll try Dress Barn and go to some different Macys. Thanks again!

I think Estelle's is worth a shot....my grandmother got a dress similar to what you described in April 2007 for my brother's wedding in Sept 07. She is already planning on going back there to get her dress for my wedding, which isn't until 2010.

Re: grandmother of bride dress
We had looked at Estelle's and she found the perfect dress--in fact she had seen the same thing in SugarPlum ($350), Estelle's sample dress ($89!!), but the one in Estelle's was petite and it only came to the mid-top of her knee and she wants her knee covered (do you see what I'm dealing with!!--I told her to walk hunched over for the $261 difference LOL). Unfortunately because it was a sample it was one of a kind. I just came back from a Dress Barn by me and all of the nice dressy outfits they had were Women sizes. ......and the search continues.....
