I'll preface this by saying that I love my grandmother very much and I can't imagine my wedding day without her...its very important to me that she be there and that she be happy. I know there's nothing that I can do to change this situation...but...its annoying nonetheless.
My parents have been really good about cutting their list down to the bare minimum because we want to keep the wedding small. My grandma is totally undoing all their hard work with all these people she all of a sudden needs to invite. My grandpa's first cousin Muriel HAS to be there, even though I've never met the woman in my entire life. Her nieces HAVE to be there, even though they spent their childhood being mean to my Mother and their adulthood having nothing to do with me.
I love her and of course I will invite these people for her...its just really annoying that I have to share my day with people who I don't know and mean nothing to me. We originally wanted only 75 people but since I am the only wedding in my family in a long time its just not going to happen. Is it so much to ask that there be no more than ~110 people there?? I don't want a huge thing!
Sorry this ended up being so long...I'm not really looking for solutions, just commiseration lol

Your mother is going to have to step in and talk with her mother about the guest list. I was in a somewhat similar situation with my MIL, long story short, got some people cut, others were not so successful. I just didn't want to meet 'new' family the day of my wedding.

That stinks. I hate random family members lol... especially since you wanted to keep it small and intimate.
Our wedding is going to have around 200 people, which I like, but I hate the fact that there are going to be people there that I've never met and when I go to talk to them it's gonna be like hi... nice to meet you...

Well, I don;t know about you but my grandma is pretty old. She is of course coming to my sister's wedding, but alot of her siblings are not. The same on FH's side - we are going to extend invites to alot of ppl but they have already told us they cannot make the trip
So, look on the bright side. Just because you invite all these older people doesn't mean they will all come.
And yes, as has been said before, let your mom do some talking for you.

sorry to hear this....i know how you feel...my mom wants to invite people i have never met!!
one of them is her oldest oldest friend, so i get that.....but some other ppl she just became friendly with the last year or so and i dont know them. i just find it very odd.
my dad on the other hand is soooo easy going. i asked if he was thinking about inviting his friends, and he said no. lololol. if i say no to family, he would be like that is fine. hahahaha.
so i guess my mom makes up for my dad's list. lol.
cant wait to see FH's family list.....i know thats gonna be a doozey!
thankfully, both sets of parents said if there list is over $$$, they will help to put $$ towards those seats.
maybe you can work out some deal like this?
