Re: Greek Brides Thread

They will stand with you up on the altar, but don't necessarily need to be dressed like a bridesmaid or anythign like that. The only requirement ist hat they are Greek ORthodox and that they will take a special part int he eremony (crowning and exchanging of the rings)

does it HAVE to be someone in the wedding party? or can i have my godmother or another family member thats NOT actually in the wedding? im not familiar even with what it is specifically. thanks!!

No, the koumbaro or koumbara doesn't have to be in the wedding party at all .. they serve a very important role in the ceremony, however, and will be up at the altar with you and your BM/MOH during the entire service.

DH's aunt wasn't in our wedding party - she wore a pretty gown and a corsage to show that she was 'important' in our ceremony .. but whomever you pick doesn't actually have to be a member of your wedding party.

HTH!

Edited to add: to help you visualize, here is a picture of our koumbara (DH's aunt, in the red dress)

In this part of the ceremony, she held the ribbons joining our crowns as we circled the altar. My matron on honor (in lavendar) held my train and our best man kept his hand on DH's shoulder.

Its a team effort

Hi! Another Greek bride here. Has anyone gotten their crowns yet? I'll probably go to Astoria for that.

Our Koumbara ordered our crowns last weekend, FH & I went with her because she wanted us to pick out what we liked. She also ordered the large candles for church. We went to Astoria, we looked at a few places before finally ordering.

Re: Greek Brides Thread

My DH is Greek so we had a Greek Orthodox ceremony. Everything was beautiful my only regret is that I did not get to experience reciting vows to one another. I'm thinking of have a vow renewel (not really renewal since they were never actually said) for our 5 or 10 year anniversary.

P.S. Ladies Anastacia's on Northern Blvd. on the border of Bayside and Flushing has lots of nice Greek stuff and gorgeous Stephanas (crowns).

ETA: We gave our Koumbaro a Movado Elliptica watch.

Hello! I'm a Greek bride also. I'm happy to see so many other Greek brides. We're getting married at Holy Trinity in Hicksville. We havent decided on what to get our koumbari yet. We have a koumbaro and a koumbara (not married) I was leaning towards jewelry for them, but we'll see. I live in Queens (Bayside) so if anyone needs help with stefana, lambathes..... let me knoe. I have all the resources outside my door. GOOD LUCK to everyone!

Re: Greek Brides Thread

Hi, I've heard good things about Helen Chaisson. I actually know her youngest son. I'm getting my hair done in Astoria. One of my closest friends has a hair salon and she will be doing my hair and most of my BM's hair. Her salon is called Hair Shapers on Broadway and 33street.

Re: Greek Brides Thread

My FH is Greek and I'm Italian/Catholic. We're getting married in his church, St. Catherine & George in Astoria. I'm also trying to learn the Greek traditions and figure out what to get my koumbaro and koumbara. They are my FSIL and FBIL and husband and wife, so my FH thought we'd get them something for the home. Is that ok or are we supposed to get them something personal for each one?

If they are a couple then getting them something for them home sounds like a great idea.

Hey agapi, we're almost neighbors....I'm in Whitestone. I am starting to think about jewelry as well. Since my brother will be our koumbaro FH suggested a watch or bracelet. So I'm debating it.

Re: Greek Brides Thread

Neighbors for now.... FH is shipping me out to Bayville after the wedding! I have no idea what we are getting the koumbaro yet. Probably a bracelet. As per the koumbara I'm leaning towards a white gold cross. Her sister told me she's wanted one. What are you getting for your BM's? Thats where I'm getting stuck. Any ideas anyone?????

Astoria has tons of stores you could visit. You can FM me for exact names and locations. There are also some in Bayside if you're closer to that area.

Hi Greek Brides!
I'm Greek, FH is Italian. I bought my crowns while was in Greece last month. They were a little cheaper then the ones here, but they had more of a selection there. I'm going back again in August. Is there anything else I can purchase there? I'm going to be the koumbara for my friends wedding in June. There are lots of things for the koumbara to remember!!!!
