Gripe with Artistic Photography...

Gripe with Artistic Photography...

Ok so I really like Angelica Glass and I've been looking at other really artistic wedding photographers but I felt bothered by somethind I pinpointed it- basically a lot of pictures are very cold. The bride and groom are sitting apart, serious expressions and looking in different directions. I kind of wish they were more... happy! But artistic posed shots really aren't. Would it be annoying of me to ask for some traditional cheesy shots as well? Smiling, looking straight into the camera?! I'm so weird, I like the artistic shots but maybe they're not for me? Anyone know another really glamorous photog that is artistic but their pictures are a liiiittle happier? Or if I could just tell Angelica that without sounding like a jerk?

We are using SilverFox for photography and one of the reasons we chose them is we wanted pictures that were not too traditional but not too cold looking. We decided to go with a main photographer and a photojournalist to get different styles of pictures.
I would also recommend Sherwood Tri art their work is AMAZING but $$$.

absolutely - tell them exactly what you want. you're paying for it so you should be able to get exacty what it is that you want. is it possible to get 2 photogs? 1 that is more artistic and one that is more traditional?

Have you checked out Blue Daisy? I feel like she has a great balance of focusing on the art of the shot as well as the couple..

I used TJ from DUet and I think we have artistic shots that are still very happy and close. Even the ones of us apart the the looks on our face are of pure love for one another.

You can ask for candid, traditional photos along with those in the photographer's personal style. I don't think that 'artistic' necessarily means cold or distant. I would tell your photographer that you don't want that for your wedding and they shouldn't be offended, at least I wouldn't be. You want to be happy with your wedding pics!

If by artistic you mean photojournalism, it's about capturing the moments and everything happening around you as well and there should be a lot of joy and happiness and love to capture! Not only posing people away from each other.

Re: Gripe with Artistic Photography...

My photographer has a photojournalistic style and he will do both the 'traditional posed' shots as well as the more candid 'magazine type' shots. I don't want my wedding pictures to look totally like a runway or cold magazine shoot because that's not real...I want it to look more like a wedding with a photojournalistic edge like in the estee lauder ads for that perfume called beautiful. I know I am trying to give examples here and I sound silly but I ultimately want pictures that capture the day...I can take engagement pictures that are more 'cold-style' if I want but on my wedding day I want my pictures to look happy. Also, Angelica Glass has taken some pictures at other people's weddings where it is in the moment and you can see the smiles and happiness in everyone's face. Not all of her pics are as cold as some look. Hope this helps!

I totally second silverfox. That is the same reason we choose them. We will be getting the best of both worlds

I third this!! My biggest issue with finding a photographer is that the ones who are more modern always make you do ridiculous poses--I'm not a model for a reason. J'Adore Love is very casual and contemporary, but also very natural and warm. Love them!

You need to find a photographer that will work with your needs. When you find a photographer you like, speak up and tell them what you want. They wont know unless you say something!

Re: Gripe with Artistic Photography...

I think you have to love a photogs style before you hire them. We had Angelica Glass. I do not feel her photos are cold. To me they look like a magazine spread. Some may be serious but she you also catches you laughing and teasing each other. Look at my epics album. You will see a nice balance. I think you can tell an artistic photog to take family shots or a few traditional photos for a thank you. By the way Angelica does do family shots and will snap a few more 'traditional' photos.

If you think you want a bunch of 'traditional cheesy shots' [as you called them] than maybe the photojournalist thing is not for you. Angelica does pose you a bit for the photo session but a lot of the day she takes pictures of you guys candid - dancing, laughing, making fools of yourself. If you have a happy party, I think you have a ton of happy photos.

I don't have my AG pictures let but I trust they will be exactly what we wanted her - we hired her b/c her artistic and detail shots are out of this world. Paying so much money for a photog makes sense ONLY if you love them and their style. Nothing wrong with some special requests but, if you are looking for a different style, maybe it makes sense to meet with a few people and then decided.

Of course - i am partial to Angelica and love her! I have a feeling I will love our wedding pictures - I am staling her blog every day for more shots and also can't wait for our proofs. I will post pictures when i have them. Here are a few from the sneak peek she posted on her blog - I think she will post more.

We're using 12th NIght, and one of the poignant things the owner/photographer told us when he showed us some albums was his focusing on the little details that bring out the personality and love of the bride and groom that others may not even notice. I really liked that and just felt so confident that he 'got us' and that he would be looking for those moments! I think that you of course need to look at albums of a photographer but also take into account how you feel with the photographer. That made all the difference to us.

I fourth this!! lol.... Love love love them for that very same reason. I love FH and don't want pics to look like he's a stranger on one of the happiest day of our lives.
