I wanted to do something special for my FH as a surprise. I was thinking of getting him a groom's cake for the rehearsal dinner. Do you think this is a good idea? I don't know anything about these cakes, what do they usually look like? Any suggestions?

Re: Groom's Cake
I never heard of a groom's cake until I started planning my own wedding but I've learned that it's a Southern tradition and it's usually a cake in the shape/design of something the groom is into. Some people have it at the rehearsal dinner and some have it at the reception next to the wedding cake.
For example, if your FH is into vintage cars, it could be in the shape and design of one. Also, I think it's usually a surprise for the groom. I think it's a very cute idea though I'm not sure if I'm doing it. If I did, I think I'd have it at the rehearsal dinner too but I'm not sure we're having one so we may not have a groom's cake either. Oh well.
