Groom's Cake

Original post by karabara

I just love the idea of the groom's cake. Does anyone know what the deal with it is though? Am I supposed to surprise him with it or do we work on it together?

As for having a relative bake the cake, one thing to consider is whether the location will allow you to bring a cake in from an uncertified baker (but it sounds like your sister is probably certified, so it wouldn't be a problem)

I couldn't belive it, but the Fox Hollow, my RH, said it would be ok if my sister made my wedding cake!!!!! They require insurance for everything else but they trust that the cake they are serving is going to be ok for the guests??? I mean, I know it will be, because it's my sister, but that's a little strange of the Fox Hollow....

But I'm letting them make the cake anyhow. It's included and I don't want my sister worrying about it - she's my MOH and she will have a 1.5 year old little girl then, she doesn't need the stress. BUT she could make a small groom's cake for Matt! Do you think you have to serve the groom's cake if you do it at the wedding itself? Or could I make a real small one, like the size of a model car, and just give it to him as a gift sort of? Maybe serve it to a few folks?

If you are going to do a grooms' cake at the wedding itself - you have to check with the BM at your CH...they may wind up charging you a plate fee. It's horrid - but some places do it. I don't know if the Fox Hollow does...but some places charge you a cake cutting fee, a cake plating fee, etc..

I am doing a surprise sports themed cake at the RD. Then we are having a traditional Jamaican black cake at the reception for our guests. So he gets two cakes!!!

I promise! Are you kidding? I reply to the boards more often than I do my regular email...

i can totally see how that can happen....i am hooked on these boards! they are so much fun b/c you get practical advice and tips as well as reality checks. i have to say that i was ambivalent about having the whole 'wedding thing' and wanted a destination wedding so that i'd not have to do a lot (or so i imagined), but this definitely makes the plannning fun and less daunting. and who can beat thes adorable emoticons??.

I am probably going to have Duff make my FH's groom cake We love his show, plus he gave a good price because it's easily transported. I am either going with a Mountain Dew bottle or a replica of his 1992 monster truck Bronco

What exactly is a Groom's cake? I've heard of them, but have never been to a wedding with one. . .

He would be shipping it, but it's one piece, no multiple tiers that need to be taken apart and shipped individually. I may just drive down myself, visit a friend who lives in Baltimore, and then bring it back. Who knows...I may get a few quotes from local bakers, but it would be cool to have Duff do it

He doesn't ship cakes...it says that on his website..unfortunately. You have to pick it up or have them drive it to you... That's why i'm not using him

I'm also surprised FI with a reef fish tank themed cake. He's got a 75 gallon tank at home. Jill from the Cake Studio has designed a proof for me. I'm really excited to see and taste the finished product. Pic is huge so take look in my album

I surprised DH with his groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner. He mentioned that he didn't want one at the reception. I got him a carvel cake with a picture of his quad and snowmobile on it. I had them write 'His other Loves' on the bottom. I got him carvel because it is his favorite!
