Groom's Cake

Groom's Cake

I just love the idea of the groom's cake. Does anyone know what the deal with it is though? Am I supposed to surprise him with it or do we work on it together?

Re: Groom's Cake

It's typically a surprise...

I'm doing mine for FH at the rehearsal dinner..

I'm not sure the custom- I am doing mine as a surprise at the rehearsal dinner. I think its customary here to do that- but my friend had her wedding in New Orleans, and they do it at the reception- the brides cake (the big one) is white cake and the grooms cake was chocolate- I thought that was a cool way to do it too.

I think it's tradition to do it at the actual ceremony...but for financial reasons - the RD will be MUCH smaller - so i'm going with that! He also won't be expecting it at all.

I'm working with Tom at Audrey's - a LIW vendor - he's WONDERFUL to work with!!!

I am not to sure.... i would love to surprise FH at the reception with the grooms cake because he keeps on telling me that our wedding day is my day and as long as I am happy than he is happy, so what a better way to show my appreciation than to surprise him with something that is soley his!!!

yum yum.....i want a chocolate cake. mmm. i also love ice cream cake. i can't write too much about the groom's cake b/c my FH likes to read the wedding boards (isn't he cute? Hi Scott!)

That would be really nice then for him!!! I desperately do NOT want the wedding to be all about me - we're in it together...and i am VERY bad with attention(though i'm working on it now)...so it's all about the both of us...

I have a general layout I want for the cake - but it has to be changed for his teams...i'll post the pic...it may be helpful :)

I'm doing the Philadelphia Eagles Helmet cake for FH but i'm doing it out of tradition...at the engagement dinner.....I'm also working with Tom from Audrey's! He's awesome and great price!

Re: Groom's Cake

oh I can't wait to do this. i was planning on doing it at the rehearsal also....but then part of me was like, hmmmmmmm i'm loving the show Ace of Cakes and wish i could get duff to do it! i was thinking of doing one of three things....
1. an exact duplicate of his computer on his desk. complete with all of his 'stuff' around it..i.e. he has a weird habit of fitzing with a pencil when he's on the computer. and it can only be red colored pencils...
2. a UFC ring - he's addicted
3. a mets cake - maybe shae stadium if i could find someone to do it. this would be an obvious theme...but as with all L.I. men - he's been a fan since he was a kid :) if anyone knows any great bakeries for realistic weird cakes on the island or in the city. let me know!

OMG - I am totally hooked on Ace of Cakes. Duff is soooo awesome! Did you see the Jay Leno engine cake he made???? How amazing - Duff had the cake jimmy rigged so that when Jay Leno pushed a button on a faux key chain, the engine revved and fire-like sparkles spewed out of the tubes!

I did find this one website that is associated with Dortoni Bakery in Levittown. Their cakes looked kind of Ace of Cakes like (minus the fire). I'm thinking of checking them out for the wedding cake, if not the Grooms Cake. I want fudgie the whale, but not sure how that would hold up.

Most leave it as a surprise - since guys usually don't think about it anyway... it's usually given at the Rehearsal Dinner. HTH

OMG - I LOVE JEFF!!! Duff kicks major booty - but Jeff is awesome!!!!

I looked into Duff and we can't afford him. If the cake is not transportable, they require you pay them to bring it to you at a REAL high price per hour...

I picked Audrey's based on the quality I read about on here and the fact that Tom said he's done cakes like this before...and his price is astounding!!!! Get in touch with Tom - see if he can work with you!!

Keep in mind though - the Mets are getting a new stadium... You could always do a Mr. Met cake!!!

I had seen some girls talk about a groom's cake on here but I had no idea what it was until I saw that photo!!! FH would LOOOOVE a cake of an old car. My sister bakes cakes .... for a living ... wonder if she could make me a cake of a 1932 Ford???

Mister Met is soooo cute! I would want to eat his nose.

As for having a relative bake the cake, one thing to consider is whether the location will allow you to bring a cake in from an uncertified baker (but it sounds like your sister is probably certified, so it wouldn't be a problem)

thanks for the tip! what if we all got together and ordered a bunch of cakes for the same weekend and negotiated with duff :) lololol kidding. mr. met is a good idea, we've had him at a few rehearsals already. and I was actually thinking of doing Shae for that exact reason - cause it will be no more and that stadium is where his memories are all from - as ugly as it is I got the shae idea from ace of cakes actually when i saw them build fenway! it was amazing!!! i'm sure out of my budget - but hey, worth a try!

My HUGE theory with everything wedding related is: it doesn't cost me anything to send an email. I sent emails to around 10 bakeries and got replies and weeded out the ones I didn't like the tone of the email, etc. I personally LOVE your idea of a Shea cake - my dad used to work security there for 15 years and i used to go visit him there all the time...that place holds special meaning to me :)

I'm all for the ganging up on Duff thing!!!! I have a slight feeling my MOH may be working on Duff for my Shower cake - but that's just a long shot because she keeps saying something that makes me think it...i'll DEFINITELY keep you all updated..if i met him - i'd FREAK!!!

I couldn't belive it, but the Fox Hollow, my RH, said it would be ok if my sister made my wedding cake!!!!! They require insurance for everything else but they trust that the cake they are serving is going to be ok for the guests??? I mean, I know it will be, because it's my sister, but that's a little strange of the Fox Hollow....

But I'm letting them make the cake anyhow. It's included and I don't want my sister worrying about it - she's my MOH and she will have a 1.5 year old little girl then, she doesn't need the stress. BUT she could make a small groom's cake for Matt! Do you think you have to serve the groom's cake if you do it at the wedding itself? Or could I make a real small one, like the size of a model car, and just give it to him as a gift sort of? Maybe serve it to a few folks?

Totally just a feeling i have...and i'm pretty good with that stuff. She keeps saying she has this HUGE thing she's working on for it & she knows of both my & my FH's obsession with that show. She keeps saying things like, my super secret project, this person hasn't emailed me back yet, i'll have to call this famous person...that if this comes through - it could be the best surprise in MOH history...stuff like that...
