Groom's Mom Wears Black

Original post by papabear

Question for you brides:

My mom just bought a dress for the wedding. Thing is that the dress is black but it has a sequin design on it. She likes it a lot and says its very elegant.

Though she plans on looking elsewhere as well, she does like it a lot and bought it at a steal.

Is a black dress appropriate for the mother of the groom? Would you find it offensive?

Relationship between mom and fiance is perfectly fine and color is not a reflection of any negativity.

Please provide opinions.

Edited to say I haven't seen the dress yet.

Re: Groom's Mom Wears Black

I personally do not wish either mothers to wear black. I'm asking them to wear a sort of Charcoal gray color. To me, if they are wearing black, it's like they are mourning over the loss of the child. I understand it's very elegant, but for me, it's our wedding, it should be joyful, colorful!!! My mom wanted to wear black, but I convinced her not to, and now I think FMIL wants to wear black as well. This is definitely a personal choice.

However, I was reading on the knot.com about what colors the mothers should wear and they said not ivory or champagne and that some people think that black is a sign of mourning.

Then again, it's completely up to you!

Good luck!

3pm church, reception is from 6-12

mother of bride is wearing some sort of light colored dress...didnt see but my guess is a beige or pink though who knows.

BMs wearing burgundy wine

I personally agree with some of the other ladies, I would prefer for my mother and future mother-in-law to wear a color other than black or white. I wouldn't mind black and something, but not all black. In addition, and this is just my opinion, I think black is very elegant, but it is also very 'ordinary' as well. I wouldn't want her to look like all the other guests, because quite honestly, she is special. You want to be able to say... My mother.... the lady in the purple!

Good Luck!

I think a black dress is fine especially if she feels pretty and elegant.

Personally I think it depends on the spirit of how it is worn - Some wear it purposefully to cause trouble - But from what you said that doesn't seem to be the case here.

I think that black can be very elegant with the right jewelery - If your mother feels elegant and beautiful in it and it doesn't offend you or your FW then I saw GO FOR IT! I told my mother if the dress of her dreams was black then I would be happy with her choice

BM dresses are black and white, and both mom's are wearing black, too. Black isn;t as taboo as it used to be. Let her wear it and be comfortable. Everyone will be looking at the bride anyway, not the mothers.

I think it is fine. My mom (MOB) is wearing black and it is one of the most elegant dresses I have ever seen.

Well I was opposed to a Black dress for my mom...she wanted it. After seeing how happy and great she looked in the dress I agreed...and she looked fabulous on the wedding day. She had a great neacklace and earring set with Srywakoski Crystals. I say whatever you both agreed to works. It's your day.

my mom is wearing black and i am fine with it - she wears black all the time i wouldnt expect her to change for the wedding - as long as she loves the dress and feels georgeous in it what difference does the color make?

these days anything goes. The most important thing is if she feels comfortable in it and will focus more on enjoying your wedding day

I know I'm more traditional than most, but I'm not thrilled with the idea of mothers wearing black to their children's weddings. I agree that it is probably the most elegant color, but it just doesn't sit right with me. JMO

I personally would not wear black to my daughter's or my son's wedding, and I know most of my friends would not do it either.

I agree that the old rules about black are out. Whats most important is that you all are comfortable with it.
I wouldn't mind if my FMIL wore black, or my mom for that matter. As long as the important people (you, FI, & mom) are happy, that's all that matters.

My mom and mil both wore black and it didn't bother me at all. It's fine.

thanks for the responses - mom is going to keep looking but if she can't find anything she'll go with black. FW would prefer her not to wear black but she won't mind if she can't find anything else.

My MIL also wore black in September and she even made her dress - she looked stunning and everyone commented on her dress! If she's comfortable and it's a beautiful dress, it will be great. Here's a photo of both our moms and my MIL dress full length.

I have no problem with black, I just would think that so many of the other female guests will be in black that 's it's nice to wear something different.

First of all, does anyone else think it's totally cool that a guy posted on here!

Second, tanbride, I love your MILs dress. I would say though, that her dress is not what I would call a typical black dress. It's black & tan and very unique, stunning etc.

I dunno, JMO!
