Growth restricted babies

Growth restricted babies

I went for my 36 week sono yesterday (I'm 36 weeks today) and they told me that one measurement was behind what it should be, so they gave it the term growth restriction. The doctor tells me everything else looks good so I shouldn't worry, but is sending me to a specialist tomorrow. Our baby is also on the low side for weight from the estimate on the sono.

Does anyone know anything about this? This is supposed to be the fun time in PG but I can't stop worrying now. Any information you have would be appreciated, as well as good thoughts and prayers. Thanks!!!

Try not to worry.

Have you been measuring ( the uterus height) behind from a while back? Is it possible you conceived later than the calculated EDD?

This happened to a friend of mine. They told her she was measuring behind and somehow they measured wrong. Although her baby did end up born 6 weeks early (due to other complications) her baby was on target for the length/weight.

Re: Growth restricted babies

I think the term is IUGR (In Uterine Growth Restriction). I had that also with Isabelle. They kept telling me all along that she was measuring small. They wanted to do a sonogram every two weeks to just make sure she continued to grow at her pace, not necessarily at the pace they wanted her to. I gave birth unexpectedly before the first sonogram for this. She was born smaller than they even thought. (She should have been at least 2 lbs. 4 oz. at 29 weeks, but was only 1 lb. 9 1/2 ounces. I am sure you know she was a preemie, but she had severe IUGR also. That is why the doctor says she is still so small. Nothing to worry about, just a smaller and of course cuter baby. They say babies with this catch up within two years. Don't worry yourself over this, I am sure it will be fine.
Those sonos are always wrong. At least they were for me and just about everyone I told my story to.

Ps..If the first time they said soemthing is at 36 weeks, I wouldn't worry about it.

At my 30 week sono Cole was measuring small, (although they told me there was a +/- 2 pound margin of error which is a ridiculous percentage). My water broke at 35 1/2 weeks, and he was 5 pounds 13 ounces at birth. At his one month visit he was 8 pounds which was still in the less than 5% chart, but today at 8 weeks he was 11 1/2 pounds, 48% for weight. My point is, thank God, he's been a small but healthy peanut since day one.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'm concerned because only one measurement is small and the rest are where they should be, and the weight is lower than it should be. We go to see the specialist tomorrow so I'm hoping he has good news for us.
