I graduate HS (13 years ago! Egad!!!) with hair down to my waist. That summer I cut it to the middle of my back...that fall, to my shoulders. Since then I've kept it no longer than my chin (with the exception of growing it to my shoulders for my sister's wedding) and have had it as short as Halle Berry's pixie.
IMO, once you cut your hair, you're NOT going to want to grow it out again. (Even though I'm contradicting myself by growing it out as we speak...I wanted to see how long I could let it grow before I got frustrated. I think I miss putting my hair in a pony tail.)
Post before & after pics when you can!!

Re: Guess what I just did!!
Yay! I'm so glad you saved the hair. I've got my appointment to do the same on Friday after work. I think its funny to hear that some husbands complain about wives cutting their hair -- my husband has been wanting me to cut mine shorter for a while -- he's tired of me saying OUCH! when he is trying to cuddle and he lies on my hair. hehe
