my coworker just received an invitation for her friend's wedding, and she was invited without a +1. when the wedding planning first started, my coworker was not in a relationship, but since then has been in a serious relationship, and now feels awful about being invited w/out a guest. she spoke to the bride to be, and the bride to be stuck to her guns, and said, 'sorry, i can't please everyone'. the kicker is, my coworker's son is part of the BP. she doesn't know what to do. she really does not want to go to the wedding w/out her BF, but since her son is in the BP, she feels obligated to go. she may even consider pulling her son out. the bride to be was insistent that that she could not budge on the +1. what would you do if you were coworker? how would you handle it if you were the bride to be? she's interested to know what you ladies have to say. TIA!

Being a bride with a crazyyy guestlist--i feel the pain of inviting a +1 if you do it for one person, believe me that yo u'll hear it from someone else if you didn't do it for them. The way I see it, is that your co-worker need to figure how close she is to the bride. Does her relationship outweigh the fact that she can't bring her boyfriend? is it really that important that her boyfriend need to be there, rather than her being there for the bride? Personally, I think it'll be pretty messed up if she pulled her son out of the wedding party for something she KNEW about from the very beginning of the wedding. Coming from a bride, and this is just me, i think she needs to suck it up and realize she'll have her boyfriend thereafter whenever and wherever she wants. she can sacrifice being without him for a few hours no?
couldnt have said it any better

How old is her son? Is he a groomsman, or a ring bearer? If he's a small child, then she probably needs to be there with him regardless if she has a date or not.

ITA - we are inviting most people with guests, but if I came down to me inviting a single friend with a guest and not inviting another friend I wish could be there, then I'd probably invite my friend before I invited someone else to bring a person I've probably never met.
I see both sides, but that is JMO.

Re: guests +1 advice
I'm inviting all of my adult guests +1. Most people don't meet their minimum anyway, so whats the harm? Plus, I'd be insulted if I were invited alone (not including sl*nt weddings, obviously)

my believes that all adults should be invited w/ a guest, and i pretty much agree, unless there are very very tight issues with space or $$. she was also never told that she would be invited without a guest, so it came as a big shock to her.
her son is the RB, and i know she really wouldn't want to take him out of the BP, it's more a matter of principal, esp since this isn't a close friend.
thanks for all the responses, she really appreciates it.

See - the only part about that which confuses me, is if they are close enough to where she asked her son to be an RB, it shocks me that she doesn't consider her close enough to let her bring a date
Its not like - the typical co-worker situation.
Hope she figures it out!!

Re: guests +1 advice
the bride might be in a tight spot financially or maybe invited a little over her max number. She might also have told other people no to plus ones. Its hard to tell! But usually there is a good reason why someone can't budge when it comes to +1's. Maybe she should just go anyway and try to enjoy it without him. We all know how stressful this time can be for a bride and should just try to understand that there might be a good reason she can't budge.
ETA:
Im confused did she send out the invites and then your friend respond only 1 person and THEN get a boyfriend?
I think adults should either always get a +1 or be asked if they would like to be invited with someone. Personally I didn't put anyone with a +1. I asked everyone ahead of time if they had someone they would like to be invited with and if so what their name was. I wanted it to be more personal than writing '+1' Im surprised if she sent teh invite and didn't at last ask if she was seeing someone- cus it sounds like tehy are close...

If I were the bride, I would just add the plus 1....i think this is a special circumstance...
also, if your co worker knows the bride and groom well enought to have her son as part of the wedding, I feel the bride should have considered the fact that your co worker now has a BF.
if it was some distant person who the couple barely knew...that would be different....
but then again, I dont know the particulars of their situation

Coming from a bride with a guest list busting at the seems, I'd STILL find a way to have her +1 there. ESPECIALLY since her son is in the BP.
I agree. My dad keeps adding people so what's is one more person. Like Yelley said, her son is in the BP....that's just mean.

this is weird because if her son is in the wedding then she and the bride must be close right? & the bride should know that now she is in a serious relationship. if the bride is on a tight budget then she should def stick to her guns, but if not she should be allowed to bring her guest.

I can see the bride's side... I'm dealing with it right now. Our guest list is out of control, and if we invited everyone with a guest we would probably be over our max. But I would also probably make an exception for her. I did make an exception for one of my friends already who is coming from Detroit and can't do the drive by herself. Plus, we are getting a lot of no's, so I figured what is one more person? And if I said no, then my good friend wouldn't be able to make it.
That really is a tough one though...

Re: guests +1 advice
to clarify a bit. this is for my coworker. the bride and my coworker are friends, but not close friends. i think the bride really wanted a RB for the BP, so asked my coworker if her son could be in the BP since it's the only age appropriate little boy she knows. my coworker has been w/ her BF for about 3 months, but they're already talking marriage - it's very serious, one of those freak great relationships that happen. the invites only just went out, and the bride new about the BF.
