Gurney's Inn

Gurney's Inn

I am considering a Sunday evening wedding in September at Gurneys-Inn in Montauk, and would be grateful to hear from anyone who has used them in the past, or is currently using them.

I've read the feedback about them, and it seems uneven at best -- no one disputes the beauty of the place, but it seems that there may be some quality/service issues. Has anyone had a recent experience there? Spoken to anyone who has? Also, although I visited last weekend, I didn't get a chance to eat there. Can anyone vouch for the food? It seems to provide value for the money, but I don't want to make a huge mistake!

Also, does anyone know how cold it gets in Montauk in late Sept.? Weather.com says the 'average high' is about 70. . . with an overall 'average' of 60. Does that sound right?

Advance thanks for any guidance!!!

Re: Gurney's Inn

Congratulations, I am planning my wedding at Gurneys in July of 05, and my best friend just got married their last year. We had the best time ever. The service was great and the staff and wedding cordinator was outstanding. Gurneys prices seem resanable to what else is out their and for what you get. You have to realize, Gurneys is not a Marriott or Ritz with marble and lots of glitzy mirrors. The location is Montauk, once known as the fishing capital of the world. I personally love Gurneys and montauk. Every time I ate at Gurneys the food was great (I always went with the fish). Best of Luck!!!!!

P.S. I tried to respond to this post earlier but I think I did it wrong, so I am trying again.

Re: Gurney's Inn

It's been about 5 years since I went to Gurney's....but.........

I have not been to a wedding at Gurney's but we used to eat there alot & have even stayed there a few times. The service is generally good, but the servers to tend to act a bit uppity at times. This is, of course in general reataurant seating, and I would imagine that they act differently at a wedding.
The food is good, especially seafodd, and their presentation is beautiful.
Also, if you are staying... the spa is really top notch.

Montauk in September is just as warm (ornot) as the rest of LI, usually only a 2 - 5 degree difference. The only thing I would worry about in September is that in the early am & late pm there is a fog issue, and the winds tend to be a little stronger that time of year.

DH & I used to go to Montauk every weekend (I used to surf) that we were in NY for many years. I think it is a great place to have your weding.

Re: Gurney's Inn

I got married at Gurney's last June. It is a beautiful place! I did have some problems at my wedding due to there coodinator. Although I have heard that he has been fired. See if you can search my post of my review of the wedding and maybe you can get a better idea of what I'm talking about. If not feel free to ask any questions! I can also send some pics if you'd like.

Thank you so much to all who have replied!! I actually changed the date from late Sept. to Aug -- so am now just worried about rain!!

I really am glad to hear that the food is good -- and feel much more comfortable with the choice.

Dawn - I think I read your post -- did you have the coordinator who yelled at you 5 mins before starting the wedding?? I was horrified after reading that, and actually expressed some of my concerns to the current coordinator about it. He has been absolutely lovely (so far ).

I would love to see pictures from anyone who has them!! Feel free to forum mail me.

My MOH got married there i think it was like 5 years ago, and I have been to 3 proms there from High School...the food to me was just OK..the Cocktail hour was beautiful on the deck, but a lot of the food was the 'frozen' type stuff...I do not kow if she chose that or thats how it was....

The food for the reception was also just OK...nothing over the top....

My parents went to Gurneys 2 months ago and said the food was not so great, they are thinking a new chef....but they voiced their concerns and a month later went back and it was absolutely delicious!

Have FUn! I love Montauk..being from Sag HArbor, we used to go to Montauk LOTS of weekends...lots of fun...Enjoy!

Two years ago we were there in December, we saw a wedding. It looked great. Didn't have the food but the hotel was very nice and the spa was top notch.

Yes, I was the bride that got yelled at before my ceremony But, like I said, that guy was fired. I really did think that Gurney's themselves did a great job. It just seemed to me that everything that went wrong all had to do with this one guy. And although I really didn't eat much all day, I heard the food was excellent, especially for wedding food. I'll FM you with my pics.

Re: Gurney's Inn

I totally agree and, in fact, chose Gurneys because of the breathtaking views. It was also a place that my FH and I felt totally comfortable. . . it was nice without being overly formal and fancy. Which is pretty much who we are.

Now I'm just trying to line up the rest of the vendors....interested in anyone who had a great experience with a DJ (preferably one who plays the music you want - including big band, swing, jazz whatever - fills any gaps with similar type music you've selected, and doesn't look totally cheesy). Does such a creature exist??? Would be VERY grateful for names of any DJs that fit that bill....

I am so amazed, by the way, at how helpful this site, and all of you, have been!! I've really been able to speed up the learning curve process re: many of the vendors I'm considering. Thanks!!!
