Why don't you just tell her that you have some things lined up but you don't want to jinx it? At least this will get her out of your hair.

Re: had a little tiff with mom
if I could afford to stay home - I would. It is what you feel comfortable with. I agree with going away and possibly moving I would want to stay home. You will enough to do for that as well.

Re: had a little tiff with mom
No offense, but I can totally see where your mom is coming from and I sort of agree with her..
Why couldn't you look for a job where you could possibly transfer to a Florida based location or something? Also, as for the 1 week vacation thing.. alot of the good companies will let you go on vacation if you give them the heads up when you're interviewing with them..
I often see you venting about $$, FH's job, this and that.. fact of the matter is that when push comes to shove and things are as bad as you say you are.. you do what you gotta do, whether it be work as a temp or anything.. regardless of what it is..
just my 2 cents.

Re: had a little tiff with mom
I just think that nothing is guaranteed, and I have seen many of my firiends waiting for a move or a new thing in their life, and they didn't geta job, and the move never came, or took alot longer to come about.
If you get a job and then wind up moving, you can myabe transfer as Marcella said. Or, having a big chucnk of time not at work on a resume, will not help you. Employers will wonder why you weren't working.
Also if you send a resume out today, they might not get to interviews until the end of may, and then you can still go on vacation. I got hired at a firm where I told them I needed three weeks to give my old job notice, and then I would work for a week and a half and then I had another vacation planned. They were completely okay with this, as long as you are upfrnt with them in the beginning.

Re: had a little tiff with mom
I started my job and had already planned a trip to Aruba. I told them on the interview & this was fine. I worked 1 week, went away 1 week then went back to work.

If I were you, I'd just get a retail job to pull in cash- pay into social security- and keep your mind 'active'- I made my DH take a job in Pathmark packing meat!!!

I agree with Marcellabella. I think even if its a part-time job, something is better than nothing.

Re: had a little tiff with mom
You really should be working rather then having your FH deal with all the pressure of the bills. Temp work is out there. Work in a clothing store atleast its something and worry about FLORIDA when it happens and not plan until it happens.........

Re: had a little tiff with mom
I'm with Marcella on this one. While nothing is guaranteed nowadays there is nothing wrong with getting out there and making a few extra bucks. From what I gather, you and Brian are paying for the wedding alone... I think a job right now is your best choice. I don't think you need to tell any job where you will be in 6 months, who knows what might happen. Go out there and work even if it's 3 days a week, you might feel better about things too. When I was out of work 3 years ago and going on interviews in the summer, I ALWAYS told them about my vacations. And honestly I got one of those jobs. Even though some companies are tough, they understand people do go away in the summer, etc.
Good luck Chippa! I hope I didn't offend you, just giving my opinion regarding your mom and the job thing.

Re: had a little tiff with mom
Maybe your mom just doesnt understand the whole situation, just explain to her you would rather find something you really like! rather than a temp job to fill up time and if it gets to hard to pay the bills you would find something while you keep looking

Re: had a little tiff with mom
Why don't you change fields? TONS of retail companies have stores ALL over the place available for transfer.
I understand you are frustrated too, but your mother has a good point.
But if you do not want a job right now, then that's a different story.
Good luck to you!

Re: had a little tiff with mom
To be honest, and this isn't to be mean, but you seem to keep making excuses..
Go wait tables! tend bar! FH was out painting people's houses at one point, but it was tax free cash!! and we weren't hurting for money, but yet, knew that that extra money could mean something 'extra' down the line..
I got into RE,which to be honest, I don't LOVE, but I had to do it b/c it fit in with my current lifestyle/work sched. and because we could use the extra money.. who can't ! lol I would go into the office and cold call 3 nights a week and then on Saturday and Sunday mornings I'd go into the office make appts. and show houses until 6 pm! AND I wouldn't even get paid by the hour BUT at the same time someone could walk in, I could show them a house that they liked and BINGO, there goes a 12,000 commission check!
Retail is Def a great idea.. also, you could work for a big name retailer or dept store and you transfer down there.. you can get benefits and the hours are usually flexible..

Re: had a little tiff with mom
Maybe you can get a part time job for now...as some of the girls mentioned in a clothing store or a doctor's office, etc. This way, you can continue looking for a full time job until you figure out what you want to do.

Re: had a little tiff with mom
Even if you took the week vacation with no pay, you aren't getting paid if you have no job, I told my jobs, I have a vacation planned and I don't expect to get paid, but I need the time off, and they were okay with it.

Re: had a little tiff with mom
I'm, with Marcella on this one. Sure temp jobs don't offer the greatest pay or benefits...but neither does NOT working. At least you'd be bringing some money in and doing something for yourself. Can you go on your FI's benefits?
