HAd No IDEA!!!!!!!!

I had no idea VYC was sooo far from the city.. I made an appt to go see it but looks like we are going to have to to cancel.. no way I am going to make my guests drive over an hour to get to the reception..

I kind of feel bad bc it looks soo amazing on-line..

How far away is it? My place is about an hour or so drive, and at first I had the same thought that I didn't want to make people drive so far, but after talking to some of my family members - they made a good point - which is that 1) It's your wedding, 2) People that want to be there will make the effort - adding an extra 20-30 minutes to their drive won't kill them.

I wouldnt be too concerned about having your guests drive an hour. They will come see you - an hour is not that far. You can block hotel rooms so they dont have to drive home that night. Dont plan your wedding around your guests.

I was the opposite...loved a place that was an hour and a half, would have 100% booked, but didn't do it because it was so far. You have to consider elderly guests and such, and we figured we didn't want to make everyone hike it all the way out on the island when everyone lives in western nassau.

I'm getting married at The Watermill in Smithtown, NY - it's about an hour from Manhattan, probably more with traffic - but people can leave early, and at the end of the day, an hour is not bad, and I'm asking them to do this once in their life, not every single week

you cant worry about all your guests.. if you do it will be miserable tryin to plan everythig around them.. trust me DH was soo worried about what everyone was goin to do between the church and the reception and I was like they will figure it out.. and you know what they did and we had a ton of people at the church where so many people said not to be surprised if no one shows up.. Plus it was a hurricane that day and was pouring!! Everyone still made it.. Yoiu must do whats best for you guys and if you fall inlove with a place then that should be it! The guests will be prepared and the important people will be there. throughout the planning process everyone will have their own opinions and you have to understand you are not going to please everyone.. The most important people that should be happy is the both of you!

Im soo glad you thought so, I know it may have come off too direct but you have to sometimes stop and think this is about your wedding.. not what everyone else wants.. I feel like that is the best advice I can give since I have been through it already.. HTH:)

We are getting married in Aquebogue. I have no idea how far it is from western nassau or queens, but I live in centereach and it's at least 30 min for me. We have guests from all over. I have aunts and uncles in nassau, parents and grandparents in the city, FH grandparents are in yonkers and jersey, and he has parents in PA, and family in NC.
You have to go with the place you like. I really do believe if people don't want to drive, make arrangements or really try to be there that day, then you really don't need them there. And when people complain, you smile and say, this is my wedding, and this is the place I liked best that I could afford and that's all there is to it.

It's YOUR wedding. Have your reception where YOU want to have it. People will come :)

FH's friend's wedding was MDW 2010. The church was in Bayside, Queens and the reception was all the way out east at East Wind and they still had over 350 people at their reception.

Arrange for a hotel block in case people want to stay over afterwards.

Don't let distance discourage you!

The people who matter WILL drive an hour to see you get married!

I wouldn't worry about it. I am getting married an hour east of where I live and have people traveling from NJ. Are you getting married in the city? That may be a different story but if you get married at the RH or a curch out there I don't see a problem.
