hair- curls- straighten first??

I have naturally curly/wavy hair but for the wedding i am having it curled 'perfect- more defined curls half/up hair/down with curling iron. i have had 2 trials at a salon (no good) who both said to not wash it the day before and leave it curly as it will curl better. but now my friend's sister who does hair offered to do it for free, we did a trial with my hair curly first and it was just right but she is telling me to straighten it with an iron two days before and not wash it (2days!?) and have it straight before we do the curls with the curling iron but I think that having it straightened first the curl won't keep? She says it will be smoother? what do u girls think? i am hoping she forgets what she suggested by the time of the wedding. I do not feel comfortable straightening it first or not washing it for 2 days. 1 day is okay but not 2 (for my hair)

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

I wouldn't straighten it..i would let it dry naturally , but do not put anything in it..it may be harder to curl if you straighten it..and don't wash it day of the trial..do it the day before..dirty hair styles better than clean hair!

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

I was wondering the same thing. I cannot imagine not washing my hair the day of my wedding. I would feel yucky all day. I think I'll probably blow it a little straight, then curl it. I don't know. We'll see how humid it is that day! That really affects my hair.

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

I have very curly hair. I go to a salon that specializes in curly hair. You might want to get your hair done by them, they are unbelieveable with curly hair. Since I am getting married on Sunday and they are not open, my girl told me to come in the day before to get my hair set (curly) and then have someone just put it up. My curls will stay over night they way they do hair. They will charge $500 to come out to me on Sunday to do it. Thats alot. They're cuts are the most amazing as well and so are their products.

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

i have naturally curly hair and i straighten it all the time. i haven't had my trial yet, but i plan on having it half up with curls, like what you are describing. when i've had my hair done before i wash it the night before and straighten it myself and this is what i plan to do for my wedding. you shouldn't wash it that morning b/c the natural oils in your hair help to keep your hair looking nice the whole next day. i also don't see a problem with straightening it yourself, b/c it will just make it easier to curl with an iron or curlers, whatever you are using. in the end it is your decision whatever you are more comfortable with. HTH!

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

i agree with the not washing it for 1 day for 2 is gross IMHO. and straightening it 1 day before isn't going to harm the curling process b/c I have done it in the past.

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

I have curly hair too and I have been to told that a dirty hair styles better (not washed that day). To get perfect loose curls they would blow dry it straight and then use a curling iron to make perfect curls.

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

My natural hair type is the same as your's: wavy/curly. I like to curl my hair once in awhile. I have done it both with my hair straight and with my have natural. (In both situations I did NOT wash my hair for at least a day- two days is better though). Both times my hair curled fine. I honestly, thought it was smoother after it had been straightened. I think what is more important than leaving it natural or straightening it is just not washing it: dirty hair holds so much better!

I agree 100%...i have curly hair but I still curl my hair because I like that spring curl look not tight curls. And i wash my hair and blow dry it with nothing in it..and I eigher use hot curlers or a curling iron...Do Not straighten it, it will look flat and it will not hold. Good Luck!

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

All my friends ask me to curl their hair and I always straighten it first..it just gives the curls a smoother look, it won't affect how the curl holds. I don't think you have to go two days without washing your hair though. I'd just wash it early the day before.

Tell her your concerns..so you can feel better about it!

I have wavy/curly hair and I never heard of this. I washed my hair the morning of, but my stylist did say I shouldn't use any conditioner.

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

Just blow it out straight the day before. Do not use an iron on it!!! The curls wont hold.

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

I have wavy hair as well and I'm planning on taking a shower and straightening it the night before. I normally wouldn't straighten it so much for curls but it will be August and it will severely help with the humidity. Good luck! Post pics!

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

I have naturally curly hair and wore my hair half up with curls like you want on my wedding day. I washed it the night before and lightly blow dried it, but not completely straight...and it was perfect the next day...don't go crazy..it will be fine..that is why you are paying these ppl so much to do your hair that day...they are professionals and if you have to blow and straighten it that morn...it will get done..you are the bride...but like I said..this is what was suggested to me..this is what I did...and my hair was perfect that day...good luck!

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

yikes i wouldn't straighten it...the curls probably wont hold as well. maybe she just said that to make the job easier for herself? its easier to curl straight hair than already curly, ya know? either way, you liked how it looked for your trial so i would do to your hair whatever you did before your trial. and i know alot of ppl will swear by not washing your hair the day of, but its not necessary. you can do it if you want to, but 2 days...ew. i wouldnt do that.

Re: hair- curls- straighten first??

Hmm, well let me tell you my experience. I have naturally curly hair and I always do my own hair with waves/curls when I go out but for the wedding I wanted it done professionally.

Clean hair does not hold a curl as good as hair that has not been washed for at least a day. I know some people don't like to hear that, but that is usually the case.

For my wedding, I went to my hair salon the day before my wedding to have it washed and straightened. They set my hair in rollers under the dryer and then blow dried it straight (not PIN straight though).

Then the morning of my wedding, my stylist (Mia) came and curled my hair with a curling iron and pinned it up in big curls (looked almost like I had a set of curlers in). My hair came out amazing and it held ALLLL day and night! I woke up the next day and my hair was still curled!

Here are some pics so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about:

My natural curly hair (pic from HM, lol)

You can see how straight my hair was before Mia curled it:

Pic of how Mia set my hair after she curled with a curling iron:
