Hair Snob

Hair Snob

That would be me. HUGE hair snob. I only ever have my hair done professionally (coloring I mean) because I am so ****ed gray and it needs to be done fairly frequently....BUT

This wedding is breaking my bank. I simply do not have $300 (inc tip) to get my hair colored every 8-12 weeks. Which leads me to my next question: Who colors their hair themselves, do you like it, which brand is better, and how do I avoid getting ashy dull brown hair? Or for that matter, a flat black? I want to go darker, but I'm terrified of the do-it-yourself results....

I also NEVER get my hair done anywhere but the salon... I used to be blonde and that was costing me a small fortune to keep it that way.. so i had him dye be back to brown.. i wanted to try it on my own so i went to ulta and I bought Castings Color up (its a wash out) lasts for 28 shampoos and i felt the color was true to what the box said and it was very even..

Rach ... where are you going for coloring that it would cost that much? I know my mom goes for a single process & doesn't spend anywhere near that. Let me know if you need someone good. You've got great hair, sweetie, don't fool around with it now!

Christine - the $300 is for cut, single process and half a head of highlights. I'm always afraid of having a flat color with no depth so I get highlights too....

...and was looking for a way to lighten my hair without being a slave to a salon. Was told on the newlywed board that there really isnt a way around it ...
I have med to dark brown hair and wanted it to be more honey like...like it is in the summer ( with some red in it too).
I used castings...3 shades lighter...but castings doesnt really lighten your hair since it doesnt have perioxide in it. But it did eeven out my color a bit and cover some of the greays ( AH The joys of becoming a mom!)

If your going to lighten (highlight) i would go to the salon...

If you have a lot of grays a professional gray-covering permanent color will actually give you the highlights because they will 'bleed through' your base color. I buy my color in bulk at a beauty supply place and then bring it to the salon where they put it on for me for a very minimal price, and then I have them cut and blow it out as well. I, too used to spend $150 a pop for color, highlights and cut, but since I quit working to go back to school this has been a great alternative for me, and honestly,I don't know if I'd ever pay those prices again!
P.S. My hair is not dull or shoe-polishy either!

I just don't know what to do (waaaah). A friend of mine colors hers at home and its gorgeous. Always shiny and healthy looking and not ashy or dull at all. But on the flip side I see too many bad home color dye jobs on the bus and stuff and I get freaked out....

UUGH! It ****s when you consider that most men pay around $12 for a haircut & they're done!

what about going to separate salons for cut & color? My colorist is at one place & I only pay $30 for a haircut someplace else. I've found that this works especially when you consider the tipping cost alone! I feel your pain

Re: also cost conscious,,,

I color my hair all the time...basically because I'm to cheap to do it at a salon lol.

I have dark brown hair and manyyyyyyy greys. I use Feria about every 6 weeks and I love it. My hair is very healthy and I'm always getting complimented on the color. My hair is shoulder length and very thick so I use the entire bottle. If your hair is longer you might need two bottles. The hardest part about doing it at home is to make sure that the color is on all your hair evenly. To start out you might want to have a friend help you because they can actually see what they are doing.

Good luck!!! : )

Thanks Karen - Feria which shade? My hair right now is a reddish-brown but I want to go closer to a little darker than my natural color. Let's say I hope to end up somewhere in Angie Harmon/Jamie-Lynn Sigler land.

My hair is DARK brown/Light black w/ grey highlights!! I have alot of grey as well. When I finally gave in & dyed my hair they mixed 2 colors together. I think that's what you have to do to make it look natural & not have roots showing. I'm going about 6 weeks before the wedding so that I can get used to it. And it doesn't look to 'dramatic'.

If you want a salon option - I go to Hamid at Vidal Sasson for a single process but he creates the color so that there are different tones to make it look really natural, not flat at all. The single process was $75 o $80 last time I went. (It's close to my natural color so I don't have to go too often)

I use crushed garnet...its kind of a dark dark brown with red highlights.

I also color my hair myself. I don't have greys yet - I do it mainly to spice up my color (add some red highlights).

I'm not loyal to any one brand, but I've recently been using semi-permanents only. They don't show any roots so I can go much longer between colors.

There's also less damage done if you mess up. Maybe you could practice with a semi-perm and see if you can get the color you want. If you don't like it, at least you'll only have to leave with it for a few weeks.
