hair trial- how much?

Hi guys,

I have a hair trial scheduled in a few weeks and i just wanted to know what the average charge is. The thing is the stylist used to work at a salon and now works out of her house. I definitely believe in paying for good work but i'm not sure if the trial is more than average. What do u think is reasonable???? Plus do i tip also? Please help. Thanks guys!!!!

One place charged me half, the other was full price.

Unfortunately, I still haven't found a place to do hair and make up for my wedding.

Good luck!

Mine was $100 and $80 the second time I went back. Honestly, I did not tip because I drove to her house and she set the price. I didn't feel a tip was necessary.

Mine will be $50

ETA: I tipped even though it was out of her house, but I don't think you have to. I'm such a pushover when it comes to tipping.

If she works out of her house then she isn't paying a fee to the salon to 'rent' the space, so you don't need to tip....honestly hair trials and makeup trials are enough money as it is lol. My hair trials were all $50 each. GL and please post pics!!

Just because she's out of her house doesnt mean you DONT have to tip. She's still giving you a service and weather its an owner, or self employer who goes around from person to person its still a little token of appreciateion for her TIME. Its all about the time and the service...

Re: hair trial- how much?

Thanks guys, anytime she does my hair i do tip her but i was just checking to see what the basic trial is. She is charging $85 which is what some of you other girls are paying. The day of is $125. She told me the other day its always $150 but I have a paper she gave me last summer that says $125 which she said she will honor if that's what she wrote.

I have used her for the last 8-10 years and she herself is getting married this year so i know money is tight. She does a great job and I feel very comfortable with her and we are close in age so we chit chat about life and stuff. I was just wondering though if it was above average. Thanks for the help and I will post pics afterwards.

TIpping originally arose out of the fact that service providers have to rent the space in a salon and to help them cover the cost because customers are happy with the service. A self-employed person doesn't have those extra costs. They can keep all of their money that they make, which is why it's not absolutely necessary to tip a self-employed person. It doesn't mean that you can't, or shouldn't, just that it's not absolutely necessary.

That is so not true. My dad owns a salon and he does not keep the money from the haircuts he does. It goes into the business like the others and he has over head to pay. I hate that people think because your the owner that its all free and clear. I too am a hairdresser and trust me. I've traveled near and far for my clients and they have all shown they're appreciation for me going out of my way for them.
