you should def tip if its an owner..you have to realize that she pays all the bills in that place and payroll and all that to run a business so she really doesnt get a paycheck..whatever is left over after everything is paid out she keeps..and sometimes its a lot sometimes not..but no atter who preforms a service..you should always tip..JMO

I agree, my mom has owned salons and you pay so much for rent, supplies, salaries, advertisement it really can add up and EVERY single client always tipped my mother regardless if she was the owner.
Also keep in mind for those who are going to someone who doesn't work in a salon but is self employed, the rules are a little different than when ppl say dont tip the owner, they arent making money off the other employee's or anything like that.

very true..they have products and things like that to pay for..but their costs are so much lower and they set their own prices so its like the whole thing is a tip sometimes..i booth rented and i would get tipped sometimes..but services require tipping..when you are working like that you count on your tips..its just a couple of bucks ladies..JUST DO IT..lol

yeah i know other salon owners and their employee's make more than them bc they'll all make around the same money but at the same time the owner also has to pay for rent and supplies. ALSO unfortunately when you work in a salon you also dont get things like health benefits.
Tips is a big discussion today lol

Re: Hair trial tipping
ok...but, then, my question is this... If the person owns a salon...the prices that she charges, should be set in order to cover her expenses...and doesn't she get a cut of what all the other hairdressers in the salon make? That's why it's always been the standard that you don't tip the owner...all of that money you've paid her, goes to her... if this person is in their own home...and you pay them...$60 or whatever...you have already paid for that service...anything over that...is not a tip...you've just increased the charge for the service...but still got the same service... that's what I don't understand about tipping...

Its hard to charge to cover ALL her expenses...my mom's salon was in manhattan and rent is expensive...You cant go charging insane prices and say well you need to cover the cost of my rent...and think about supplies, do you know how expensive it gets at a salon to constantly order all those things. Plus the telephone bill, con ed bill and all that. Yes it depends, every salon is different...some get salary and some get commission, some get a mix...many times about 30-40% goes to the owner but this is on the commission side, otherwise there is a salary the salon owner does HAVE to give to the workers...also dont forget receptionists and assistants, wash girls all will get a salary....but trust me when you're paying the rent for these places which can be insane, one person i know was paying $20,000 a month. Plus dont forget things i said like these ppl dont have any health benefits or anything like that.
I think ppl look at tipping too technical and sit there like but wait they own this or this and that...I do it bc i appreciate what they did, it is a service that yes is custom to tip and for me its a thank you to them.
