hair/make up question

hair/make up question

I understand getting my hair and my BM hair done professionally, but i'm starting to think that make up might not be something I really want to spend that much money on.

I never wear make, but this weekend I needed to wear some for a choir performance so I wouldn't look like a ghost (I'm soo pale), so asked my mom for help and she did a wonderful job. She's going to go with me to CVS this week to buy me some stuff of my own so that I could maybe get into the habbit of wearing make up.

So now I'm thinking that maybe my BM and I could do our own make up. What do you girls think?
TIA

I am probably having one of our BMs, who is very into makeup, etc - do our makeup - and then she can always reapply it for me!

it was VERY expensive and I still can't believe what I spent on hair & MU between trials and the day of my wedding. but it's the one day of my life that I could justify it... and I wanted to look my absolute best!

I tihnk it's whatever you want. I booked Oksana and am using my hairdresser to do my hair of the day of, but that is because I just don't want to have to worry about doing it myself- plus they know how to bring out your features for pictures. A friend of mine from grad school, got her makeup done at Clinique and bought everything and on the day of her wedding, she just did it herself. It's up to you since it's your wedding!

Re: hair/make up question

As a former makeup artist (I've been out of it for 3 years now)- I can tell you that unless you know what you are doing, DON'T try doing your makeup yourself.
First of all, on the day of your wedding, you are going to want everything to go smoothly. All your loose ends should be tied, and the day should be easy and calm.
By you doing your own makeup, you risk many things going wrong. Like, your eyeliner doesn't go on right, your eyeliner runs, you got mascara in your eyes, your mascara clumps, your lip liner is wrong. Your foundation reflects light instead of absorbing it (causing that 'white faced' look we all see in photos)-
IF you do decide to cut costs, I'll give you a GIANT hint--- ANY makeup counter will do your makeup for free. Yes, I said FREE. This means, that prior to your wedding day, make an appointment with a specific counter (Clinique, Mac, Estee Lauder, Stila, etc) and tell them you would like a makeup consultation, you are getting married. After your appointment, tip the girl ($10-$20, whatever you think is appropriate). Then, make an appointment on your wedding day to get the same makeup done by the same makeup artist. No matter what, make sure you use the same makeup artist.
Definitely tip her again, and if I were you, I'd buy some valuable items that will keep your makeup fresh for the day: Lipstick and or gloss, lip liner, powder- that should do it, unless of course you love it all and buy it all!

I hope this helps. Going through a makeup counter is MUCH less expensive than hiring a makeup artist for the day-
Good luck to you!

the problem is i don't know if I'll have time to go to a department store to get makeup done at a counter.

Ahhh...I understand.

So why not go ahead of time, get tips/tricks, and make sure you get an understanding of how to apply makeup?

Re: hair/make up question

I was like you - I don't wear makeup normally and I thought I could learn to do it myself for the wedding, but it ended up being more stressful than I thought and I was so glad I got a professional makeup artist. It was one less thing for me to worry about.

Another reason why getting a professional might be good is that she used techniques and products that made my makeup last the entire day. The few times I've done my own makeup for events it doesn't usually last past a couple of hours.

Another option is that if you say you liked the way your mom do it, what about having her do your makeup instead of you doing it yourself?

I originally ment having my mom or one of my BM's do it for me. I still have time, so I'll try doing my own make up first on a day to day basis and see how well that keeps. Or i might just say to heck with it all and get a professional

It's definitely something that can be learned, and like you said, you have plenty of time. Good luck!

Re: hair/make up question

if i didnt' know much about makeup, i wouldnt' attempt to do it myself for my big day. also, sometimes it will look okay in person but when it photographs i feel like it makes such a difference when you get a professional job done. if you don't want to spend the $$ on a professional artist, maybe you can find a friend or bm who is very good with makeup and can do it for you. again, your big day shouldnt' have any stresses, so if you are fussy/picky i would go with an artist and have a trial beforehand. otehrwise, i'd say find a friend who does a great job with makeup.

Re: hair/make up question

I went to the MAC counter with my BM and we picked out all my wedding day make-up. Then she applied it for me that day-she's not a prof. but better than me. I had her apply it once before the wedding just to make sure I liked it - we took pictues of it too. It came out great and I am glad I didn't spend the extra $$ on having someone else do it, plus I got to keep all the make-up!

I am getting my makeup done professionally. I know it is expensive, but I want to make sure it is perfect for the pictures.
