Half past 4 in the afternoon or 5 o'clock in the evening?

Half past 4 in the afternoon or 5 o'clock in the evening?

Taking a few minutes out from the insanity that has been this week. 3 more days till the move is done!

Anyway, our ceremony is at 5 but our friends and family tend to be notoriously late to everything. FMIL is always 30 minutes late no matter what.

What sounds better for a formal wedding and do you think people will know to get there early? I don't want people walking in late to the ceremony. The RH has drinks and stuff for people who come early.

If I go with 4:30 does the 'afternoon' part make it sound less formal and would people think that I'm late if I walk in at 5?

Is it supposed to be 5:00 in the evening or is that still the afternoon?

Which would you use?

the invite always calls for a half hour before its supposed to start. for example, ours is a saturday night and starting at 8, but the invite will say 7:30

always go with a half hour before. The RH or place of ceremony would tell you the same thing. I start walking down the aisle at 6 but the invite will say 5:30.

I don't like the idea of putting it for a half hour before. It'd be good for a person like me who is perpetually 5 minutes lates, but there are also people out there like my aunt who arrives 1/2 hour EARLY to anything she attends and I think it's incredibly unfair to her to have to wait around for an hour just in case other people are late.

Now I'll just hop down off my soapbox and tell you that we put ours for 5 o'clock in the evening, not afternoon. HTH!

i understand what the post above me is saying...the great thing about my RH (we are having the ceremony there as well) is they have a hospitality for the half hour leading up to the ceremony time. So I put 5:30 on the invite, I walk at 6, but b/w 5:30 and 6 there are refreshments and little finger foods for the guests as they come in.
Plus if you know you have someone who it always early..you whisper the plan to them so they don't waste time.

Just from experience... I went to a wedding this yr where the bride put 6:30pm on the invitation.. We got there at 6 ish, and we had to wait in a hallway until 6:55 before they let us into the ceremony room.. and the actual wedding didn't start till 7:15... When everyone found out the real start time was 7pm and she had put 6:30 so everyone was on time, they had some not so nice things to say about the bride and were really pissed.. I think it was mainly about how the RH handled it by making everyone stand in a hallway, so I would be sure they are really entertained or at least given a place to sit if you put an early start time on there... There were drinks served in this hallway and it didn't really make anyone less pissed off lol

I would write a half hour early. Thats what we will be doing. I guess the people who show up even earlier will jsut have to wait

Better off being too early than late

I think its good to keep invitation to 4:30 but ceremony at 5:00

the 1/2 hr thing before is what any wedding planner and RH would tell you. we are having violins playing upon arrival, serving champagne and strawberries and there is seating in the lobby.

what would be worse than you walking down the aisle, or even in the middle of the ceremony and hearing the door open and close, ppl saying excuse me to get to a seat??

if you're that worried abt people who are normally early, then you can tell them personally what time it actually will start. as a whole though the invite should say 30 minutes prior to when you want to walk down the aisle.

If you have a hospitality hour that's not so bad. We got married at a church so there was absolutely no hospitality hour, though there was one at the RH.

All I know is I put the correct time and nobody walked in during the ceremony (and I'm certain some people were late). And if they did, I was too blissed out to notice or care.
