Re: hand canceling
I didnt know this either. At the post office when you bring them there, they dont put them through the machine, they do them by hand so that the envelopes and any rhinestones or monograms dont get damaged, You have to already have stamps on them but then they will do them by and instead of the machine.

Re: hand canceling
when you bring mail to the post office to be sent out they put each envelope through a machine. the machine stamps a bar code over the stamp so i cannot be used again.
with wedding invites they are usually too thick and can be ruin if pushed through the machine so a USPS worker has to stamp each envelope by hand so the envelopes dont get ruined
hence the term 'hand cancelling'

Re: hand canceling
When you bring all of you rinvites to the post office you ask them to hand cancel them so they wont have that ugly bar code on the envelope. I had 150 invites & my post office did all of them. Some girls have said that the post office actually made them do it themselves. But my post office did it & never asked me to do it. Just so you know.

Re: hand canceling
When I mailed my STDs, I went to get a few books of stamps, and the woman at the desk noticed I had some envelopes in my hand so she asked if I just wanted to give them to her instead of putting it in the box. I said sure, and then nearly when I saw her take out the stamp and start hand cancelling them! Without even asking, for a tiny STD envelope, I was shocked! I'm definitely going to bring my invites back to the Nesconset office lol, I don't care if it's not my own.

Re: hand canceling
Hand cancelling is not more expensive - what is is the postage for size and shape variances....but the actual hand cancel is not. Another LIWer posted about this since her FH works for the post office - if they say they need to charge, that isn't the case and make sure to go somewhere else.

Re: hand canceling
FYI - When I was at a post office in the city, they advised me that even if someone requests hand canceling, there is no guarantee that they will not still end up in the machine. She also told me that the first 50 are free and then they charge for each one afterward - don't remember though, it was only something like 5 cents each.

there is definately no guarantee that they will hand cancel them for you, regardless of what they say. They dont let you do it yourself anymore, and some ppl will just yes you and not actually do it. I went to one PO and the guy said he'd do it with half an attitude and sounded like he could care less, i walked right out and brought them someplace else. The second woman was SO nice and told me the machine is horrible on invitations and promised to do each one herself right then. Bless her heart!
I've never ever heard of them charging to do this.

they can't charge you..ask to speak to a supervisor if they do ..
and hand canceling prevents them from going through the machine at the post office you mail them from..depending how far they have to go they may still go through a machine upon arrival, but it should never be all the invites, and it should also only be if the people aren't paying attention--bc lg envelopes can jam the machines so they're not supposed to put them through
