Hand Canceling

Hand Canceling

Is it necessary? I've seen tons of people complaining how they can't get their Post Office to do it for them, but I guess I don't understand why you have to? Might just be totally naive. Thanks!

Re: Hand Canceling

Invitations are a little bulky so they tend to get stuck in the sorting machine. This eliminates any worry that your guests won't get their invites half eaten or at all.

Better safe than sorry! I think you should be okay if you don't have any embellishments like rhinestones or ribbons, but I'd still do it anyway. HTH!

i just wanted to do it because after spending money on calligraphy and zazzle stamps, i didn't want the auto cancelling machine to destroy the front of the envelope with lots of smudges and stuff.

but, it's certainly not the worse thing in the world if you can't do it. and believe me, it's not always easy. i had to go to 2 different POs.

Did the 2nd one wind up doing it for you? How'd it go?

Hand canceling simply means that a human stamps a mark over the postage stamp, instead of a machine doing it...

for my wedding...the PO let me stamp them myself bc they didnt wanna do it

Re: Hand Canceling

for my invitations I went to the post office near my job. I went in to purchase the stamps a few days before I was planning on mailing them & the nice women asked when I was getting married, when I was sending the invites & she offered to hand cancel them as long as I got to the post office early in the day. so thats what I did.

Re: Hand Canceling

You can tell if the invite has been hand canceled...it has a circle stamp over the postage stamp.

Since I notice everything about weddings now, I have received MANY wedding invites that were hand canceled but eventually went through another machine at another post office. So just b/c they were hand canceled to begin with, doesn't mean they won't ever go thru a machine.

ITA - I am bringing my invites to a smaller PO in my town...they have already agreed to hand cancel them for me (my Dad knows the postmaster). I knew if I went to the larger PO in my town, it would have been harder to get them to hand cancel them because they are always so busy.

Good luck!
