Hand Canceling - Does it really make a difference?

Hand Canceling - Does it really make a difference?

I know that I read somewhere that it's good to have your invitations hand cancelled, but I'm not sure what it really avoids, since the invitations still need to go through a different machine...Thoughts?

I didn't have mine hand cancelled and they were just fine. I don't know what the difference is I never even thought about doing that I just put postage on and dropped them at the post office!

I hand canceled mine but i also put hand made wax seals on the back of each invite and they would have broken the machine if i let them go. so it should be fine if your invites are just flat :)

That's probably what Im doing too. Postage and then dropping them to the post office.

The invitations are hand cancelled so that they do not get chewed up in the machine. Because alot of invitations have decoration on them they get caught when they go through the machine.

If the mail handler hand cancels them then they never go through a machine and are 'bopped' and put into bins to be separated for delivery.

so originally i thougt i wanted to to do this. i sent mine out in batches bc i dont have the space to hold everything and i was sick of looking at them hehe. so i went to the PO and they said they would hand cancel. well when my friends got them, i asked and it wasnt! by then i was annoyed so i just dumped the rest in the mailbox - didnt even go to the post office haha. i asked around and saw some and they looked fine. at that point, hand cancelling seemd like such a small thing...so i didnt bother to do it for the rest of the invites.

I 'hand cancelled' them since we have pocket folds, and I didnt want to jewels to get messed up but they told me in the post office that they still scan them through the machines. (Post office in Grand Central Terminal).
I would ask for it anyway, better safe then sorry just stand over them and watch them do it (that's what I did )

So if I get basic invites with no jewels, pocketfolds, etc (which is what I am planning on), is it ok to NOT hand cancel?

It should be Ok to not hand cancel them because they should not get caught in the machine if there aren't any jewels.

i would say yes. mine were pocketfolds, but no jewels or embellishments and all was fine.

Mine have a ribbon around them - think that will cause a problem?

what do you say when you go to the teller to ask for hand canceling?

just 'please hand cancel these' and then walk away?

it seems so simple. do you really have to stand there and watch them do it! i dont know if i want to watch 75 invites be hand canceled

Sometimes - they'll hand you the stamp and you can do it yourself...(i've read girls saying that - i don't know it from experience)....

Also does it cost more to hand cancell them?

We have flat invitatins and handcancelled. It took FH and I like 10 minutes and did it ourself! I dont know if people even notice but it was 10 minutes out of our day and we wanted the envelopes and calligraphy to look prestine!

i hand cancelled our save the dates (cuz i had something attached to the back of the postcard)...and the lady at the post office stamped them in front of me but she said any that were 'out of the area' that this post office delivers to aren't guaranteed that they won't go through a machine after they arrive at the other destinations.

but i have no idea if this is true or not because i went to another post office and they didnt say that. i didnt get any complaints about the save the dates being ruined. everyone said they were fine.

Not true - they still go thru a zip code sorting machine.
