Hand cancelling

Is it necessary? Where can I do it in manhattan?

I have 130 invites, do I have to do them at different times?

Re: Hand cancelling

My invitation lady recommended I do the hand cancelling since my invites have a bow on them and going through the machine may smoosh them. She told me to go to any post office and go to the window they will either do it or give you a stamp to do it. I am gonna be doing that as well.

I think it's a real good idea, but I did hear that you may have trouble doing it in Manhattan. I know friends of mine that wanted to do it in NYC and the post office says they don't do it there so they went home to LI to hand cancel and bring all the invites.

My post office said that they go through a machine NO MATTER WHAT, so there is no point in hand cancelling. My invites are in an envelope that is like a box and they are arriving just fine.

We can meet up and I can take it to my local PO near my house. I took 125 invites to the PO in Bay Ridge at 7am, and it took less than 10 minutes. Oh, and they do HAND CANCEL...and do not run it through the machine...I sent one to myself and my family.

The PO told me this as well.

I brought 165 invites to the Forest Hills Post office in the middle of the day. This is a pretty busy PO. I waited on line, brought them to the window and asked told the woman I needed them Hand Cancelled. She signaled me to go to the door and she took them and did them for me!

Not necessary (IMO) & I had bows. All invites arrived in 1 piece & intact.

Maybe I would have if I splurged on calligraphy.

Re: Hand cancelling

Here's my hand canceling speech again.

I wasn't going to do it - I didn't think it was necessary. However, the very nice guy at the post office offered to do it for me, so I had him do it.

This was a GOOD decision. I later sent out a few additional invitations (including an extra to my parents) without having them hand canceled. Also, though post office error (unrelated to the hand canceling), I got to see 8 of my hand canceled invites that got returned to me + 2 that had address errors.

The ones that were hand canceled were in very good shape - almost none to mimimal damage to the invitation. The ones that were not hand canceled were all crinkled on the top. They weren't ripped to shreds or completely destroyed, but they were definitely noticeably bent at the top and looked a little beat up.

Given that the post office will hand cancel them for you and it doesn't cost anything, I think it's worth it IMHO.

Also, if you have bows or anything at the top of the invite, I'd hand cancel them so they don't get caught in the machine.

The BOTTOM goes through a machine at the receiving PO. If you see my post above, that machine did no damage to my invites, but the first one (at the top) did.

There's less chance the envelope will get caught on the bottom b/c of the way the flaps work, too.

Don't get me wrong, my invites still got where they were going. They just arrived in better shape when I had them hand canceled.

Re: Hand cancelling

lol, I personally hand cancelled my invites and at least 2 people have said they did not even GET the invite: funny thing is, they were all sent at the same time from the same place and multiple invites were sent to both addresses!!
