Re: hand cancelling
I don't think hand cancelling is a specific stamp but I think I know what you're talking about. Because my invites were $1 to mail the only $1 stamp they have is not attractive. The post office lady made it sound horrible but it really wasn't as bad as she made it out to be. I didn't mind using it.

oh b/c the woman who is doing my invites said that when she had her invitations hand cancelled for her wedding, it was a big black stamp on the front and back that looked like tire tracks! she said it was really ugly and made the envelopes look bad

Re: hand cancelling
Tire tracks are when its NOT hand cancelled. A hand cancel is just a round ink stamp (not a stamp that you lick), it almost resembles what a seal would look like but it's ink. And they position it so that is just covers a small part of the stamp you use. It's not big at all and it's not on the back either so I don't know what she was talking about...

If you are getting the tire tracks that is because the invitations went thru the machine. There will be little lines on front/back of envelopes...check your regular mail today & you may notice some of the envelopes have this. The hand canceling stamp where I did mine was red...but can sometimes be black too.

If you get them hand cancelled, trust me, you won't get the tire tracks. That's the point of hand cancelling. Take a look at any recent letters you've recieved of any kind. There's the ink stamp showing where it came from and all those squiggly lines. If you get them hand cancelled you won't have any of those squiggly smudged lines. Just a nicely placed circle that's done by hand.
Don't worry, there's won't be any tire tracks.

Re: hand cancelling
Mine were a red cirlce, and they really weren't noticeable at all. Don't worry about the outer envelope, they're just going to throw it away, and nobody will notice it anyway...

Re: hand cancelling
When I had gone to the post office I requested that they be hand cancelled. Some of my family members that received them...looked un touched...but my co workers got them-said they had the black stamp on it. MAKE sure you stress it!

Re: hand cancelling
ohh ok I get what you meant now. If you get it hand cancelled it should be a little round red stamp in the upper right corner. What you're talking about is if they're not hand cancelled.

Re: hand cancelling
They had me and FH hand cancel our own invites. took 10 mins at the most. I'd suggest doing that if you are that concerned. It's a small circle that touches the stamp.
Really not that big of a deal. Like another poster said,,,,they throw out the envelope anyway.

Re: hand cancelling
I get the impression it is easier to get the post office to do it if it's less than 50...so you may need to make more than one trip.

Mine were a red circle that only went halfway over the stamp.

Re: hand cancelling
FYI--- Even though invitations maybe hand stamped it's sometimes up to the plant to send them thru the machine or not. You can feel the difference if the envelope is hard (like DIY) that chances are your ok. If they are thin...like the ones sold in bulk in the stores & you just print...I can almost guarentee those will be put thru machine. On mine I had a sticker that thru the envelop off balance. That can't be put thru machine because it would rip them right off. As I mentioned I work for USPS & there are no guarentee on what the plant will do.

Re: hand cancelling
I think mine ended up being a red cicle within a square type thing. with the date, state, and town/ zip i believe of the PO you are at. If you get any letter in the mail it's similar to the post mark that's on there it's a little bigger...- not that hidious but it's definitely better then your invites possible having the envelopes ripped and such or getting stuck in the machine if they are thick or have uneven thickness. Personally it looks nicer then the machine doing them b/c they feed so many of those thru a minute and the ink smears ...etc... hand cancelling is a little nicer- but like any other stamp on an evelope it's not glamous. JMO
PS: I personally didn't like the $1 stamps so we did spend more money but we didn't want the stamp to take away from everything else we had put so much time into. Even though one stamp would have been so much easier I almost gave in!

Re: hand cancelling
i know that there is a big chance that the envelopes will go through more than one machine, but i figure if i can at least have them hand cancelled it will be 1 time they are spared
ETS: im waiting on one of my invites in the mail - she had it hand cancelled and sent it to me so we can see what condition it arrives in - its coming from washington state! im nervous!
