Handling of an absent parent during Wedding process

Handling of an absent parent during Wedding process

I wanted to know if any of the past/present/future brides have had/are dealing with an absent parent on Wedding Day?

My mother passed away four years ago (a year before I met my FH) and it has been hard at times not having her here to share in the moments that I know she would've enjoyed.

I know of one girl who lost her mom too and she said she had her sad moments before the wedding, and did her best to not let it get to her on the day of. I know my sister took a moment to herself when she got married. We also paid tribute to our mom at the reception by having apple martinis (her favorite drink).

I was just curious if any other brides are going through something like this? Maybe not a parent, but a sibling or even the groom's family?

Sorry for the Debbie Downer thread.

My mother has been gone for 20 yrs and I still miss her everyday. I think in our cases, not having our moms here is probably the hardest to deal with. We mentioned remembering close family members who have passed on our ceremony programs. I'm also including a locket pinned on my bouquet. I got it on Etsy and I love it. It's in book form - so the front is her picture, the back and insides have more pictures and some quotes and poems that I saw fit. I made a keychain version for my FH since he lost his dad just 2 yrs after I lost my mom.

There a quite a few brides on here that I know of that are going through the same thing.
My dad passed 23 years ago on the 29th. I was 8 and though I've gone through my life passing milestones without him I still have moments where I cry hysterically because he won't be there physically to give me away. I will tell you though I know he will be there in spirit.
At my brothers wedding, he got married in a gazebo and during the ceremony there was a bird sitting on top, when it was over it flew away.
I know it isn't the same but look for little signs from your mom on the day, she will be there for you.

I have not seen/spoken to my mother in 14 years.. It never bother me till I started the wedding arrangements. I see girls with their moms going shopping for dress/giving their advise all that stuff. Im not necessarily missing my mother I miss A mother figure I guess, I am an adult but still I would like a mothers input and guidance if that makes sense .My father has been very sick, in and out of the hospital for the past 9 moths so I am hoping he will be at my wedding. Just the more I think about it the harder it gets

My father cut off contact with me and my sister about 5yrs ago he lives in California and used to call us on holidays and birthdays then one day he changed his number and stopped calling. I know he's alive still cuz my aunt bumped into him a couple of months ago but he didn't acknowledge her. After his actions I really don't care that he's not in my life anymore but it's just awkward now with the wedding people keep asking about my dad and who's walking me down the aisle.

My father passed away 4 years ago. I asked his best friend (who I call my uncle) to give me away. I plan on doing something for my dad at the wedding, just not sure what. I know that we will most likely have one of our signature drinks be a nod to him

Fh mother passed about 4 years ago now. And my grandma passed 10 days after we got engaged! I totally understand how hard it is. My grandma wanted nothing more then to take Mr dress shopping at Kleinfelds......when I went to Kleinfelds it was very emotional even more so when I said yes to the dress without her there. Through out the process of planning I just cry when I need to. Talk about her and remember her. As far as remembering them on the wedding, we r going to do a special unity ceremony. We r doing cookies water, fh will have blue and I will have yellow when we join them together it will become green...then we are going to put a white carnation in the vase with the green water when the priest says the part about remembering those that r no longer physically with us fur each person. Then at the reception fh and I are going to dance to a song for his mother since he can't have a mother son dance. Then I think we will also have pictures on the escort card table with those pictures abs a poem that days when those we love become a memory that memory becomes a treasure.

I still have both my parents, so I can't say I understand, but I lost my aunt last year and my grandma ( who I was extremely close with ) a little over two months ago, not long after we got engaged, and struggle greatly with the thought of them not being present, especially because they are the two people ultimately responsible for me and FH ending up together. It will be hard, and I'm sure there will be tears, but know she will be with you.

As a lot of the girls have already said ( as well as you yourself ) there are ways to acknowledge her on your special day be it a signature drink in her memory,a bouquet locket or any other special touch you can put on your day that will keep her with you - even if your guests aren't aware of it.
FH and I decided to have our ceremony at the RH and are going to have Pastor April as our officiant, as I got in touch with her while my grandma was not well hoping to have her marry us in front of her in the hospital (not ideal, but would have meant the world to both me and her). Unfortunately, she passed a few days after. So the ceremony will probably be very bittersweet, but it will also be very meaningful.

Best of luck to you, and remember it is OK to be sad about it and it doesn't make you a debbie downer, it is an unfortunate part of reality.Stay strong.

I get sad sometimes when making decisions about the wedding without having my parents here, but I have alot of friends and my fathers side of the family has been extremely supportive after they passed away. even my FMIL- she bought me antique mini picture frames to put on my bouquet so i could put pictures of them in it so in spirit I could have them walking down the isle with me...I thought that was super sweet.

Stay strong!! just be reminded that you still have others around you who i'm sure would be more then happy to talk to about wedding decisions, stress and concerns.

I lost my father 13 years ago and then lost my mother two years ago. There are times when it's really hard to think about all that's going to happen that they wont see but then I just keep reminding myself that they are seeing it and experiencing it all with me. I'll mention them in the program and at mass. I still have to look for my mom's veil because I want to wrap it around my bouquet.

My mother passed last July..not a day goes by that I don't think about her and wished she was here. It has been a very difficult process because of this. I break down every time I put my dress on.

I lost my father 17 years ago and my mom 3 years ago, 2 weeks before meeting my fiance. I can totally relate to how you are feeling. Like the other brides have mentioned I try to focus on the fact that both of my parents will be there in spirit and focus on the amazing friends and new family I will be joining. I also am planning on carrying a locket on my bouquet and making a special photo memorial candle with my parents wedding picture on it. I am going to play a song for each of my parents as well.

While there are times I can get very sad I try to remember how happy my parents would be for finding my FH. I know they will be looking down and dancing the night away with us.

Just reading this thread put tears in my eyes. In May it will be 8 years since my dad has passed away. He never met my FH. I miss him so much. I think about him all the time. I don't even know who is going to walk me down the isle, probably my mom. I am so grateful to still have my mom here, but I was daddys little girl and you always dream of both your parents being there on your wedding day. Your not alone.

I still have both my parents - however my father has been in and out of the hospital the pass couple of months (diabetes) and my mother and I have not spoken to one another in almost 10 years. Trust me when I tell you I have my days. When I got engaged my FMIL told me she was buying me my dress. There are no words to describe how I felt and when she was there with me as I found my dress it will be a day I will not ever forget. As for my father I take it one day at a time. I have my good days and I have my bad days. It is going to be a very emotional day for me and I am still taking in the moments as they come. Despite it all I count my blessings everyday for the more you count them the brighter they shine.

My mom passed away almost 10 yrs ago and my maternal grandmother passed away in November(my other grandparents passed away when I was younger). I'm having a table with photos of lost loved ones to represent them at the wedding. It's hard not having my mom around for such an important part of my life. At my brother's wedding I danced with him since my mom had passed. I know it will add to the emotion of the day, I think I can speak for many on here that losing a parent will always be tough no matter how much time has passed

I am very grateful that I have a loving FMIL that will be happy to go dress shopping with me when the time comes, to be involved in anyway she can (my FFIL is also a caring man, who looks forward to the day as well. He talks about it all the time.) When we got engaged, she said on the phone 'I'm going to have a daughter!' and it brought me to happy tears (my FH is an only child).

As for my father, I've always had a weird relationship with him, but he is there for me. (My father and my mother separated when I was little.)

Thank you ladies for sharing your stories. It's a comfort knowing that others are sharing the same feelings I am and will be paying tribute to loved ones on the day of.
