Re: Happy Anniversary LIMOM!!!!! 37 years!!!!

Oh my God!!! What a surprise to see this. Thank you all so very much.

You are certainly putting on the pressure here. Secrets for success, huh?

Well, first of all, as Aliciahelene says, we all enter into marriage expecting it to last forever. But you truly have to know it's a commitment for your entire life. There are no 'if it works' kind of thing. I followed the lead of my parents and my in-laws and I saw bad days and good days, but divorce was never an option. As long as there is no abuse of any kind, no adultery, no drug or alcohol addiction to content with, marriage is for keeps! The reason I say this is bec. my cousin was divorced and one of the reasons she sited was that divorce was around her in her married life, and it became an option that we didn't know about as we were growing up.
It takes lots to make it work.
Definitely putting eachother before all others is the most important element. That along with compromising... being kind to eachother's feelings and opinions...never saying hurtful things because they can never be taken back.... learning to pick your battles....and having a true belief that things happen for a reason. Many times in those years I wished and argued for things I really felt I wanted. There were compromises, and sometimes I got my way, but in several instances my husband and his wisdom prevailed. And in those instances I see how wrong I was. I'm talking about important relationships in our lives, where to live (next door to his parents for 25 years!!!), and how to educate our children. Really major stuff. So have faith that as a couple you will choose what is best for your futures together, and truly commit to your marriage and your partner.

My son gave us the most charming Anniversary card that says:
'You two seem perfectly compatible!
You're always happy, you hardly ever disagree, and you always have a great time when you're together.'
Inside it says 'Are you sure you're Married?'

This to me was the greatest compliment anyone could give us. I pray he, my daughter, my other two sons, and ALL OF YOU hear those words from your children 37 years from now.

I wish you all the same luck and success many of your parents and I have known. You will have to strive for it each day, sometimes in small ways and sometimes larger ones, but you will do it, and when you have children, you will want to be the best role models for them that you can.

My sincerest thanks and best wishes for the New Year and always.
Mary

PS. Did I get carried away here! I'm sorry girls but I obviously had more to say than I realized.

Re: Happy Anniversary LIMOM!!!!! 37 years!!!!

Yabbobay, the trip to San Francisco would be a great idea, but that's out of the question. How about the obvious, a week-end somewhere closer? Or how about a cruise to Bermuda in late spring or early summer out of NY? Last year my daughter got her brothers to all chip in and we absolutely loved our week-long cruise to the Caribbean.
This year she got me a much wanted set of 24 Mikasa Christmas mugs and cake plates.
My son and DIL found an old photo of us from one of our first dates. It was a tiny 2X3 inch photo with torn edges. She had it restored, enlarged and put in a beautiful antique frame. We unwrapped it, and through tears in my eyes, she helped me find a spot on the wall to hang it. It is a very touching, special gift.
Think of what your parents would enjoy and not buy or do on their own.
Good luck. I would love to hear what you decide.
