I can't decide whether to have my wedding in the city or on LI. Has anyone been to a wedding at both the Harrison House and the Yale Club? Which was nicer and more fun? Or if you've been to a wedding at both the Yale Club and Carlyle on the Green, which was nicer and more fun?

Honestly, I think the 'fun' factor you are speaking about has more to do with the entertainment and your crowd than the place itself. What are the specific reasons you are torn between the three locations?

I have been to all those locations-- I looked at Harrison HOuse and Carlyle and I have been to an event at the Yale Club-- although it was not a wedding..
When I started looking- I wanted a city wedding.. then decided I wanted outdoor space for pics, etc. so decided on LI..
Depending on when your wedding is-- Harrison House has beautiful grounds, but I did not like the ballroom. I think they can tent the outside and do everything out there- if you were interested in that.
Carlyle is nice-- but I think their grounds are not too exciting.. Although I do like the indoor space better for a wedding.. It was our second choice.
The ballroom at Yale Club is really pretty-- but, there is something about looking out the windows and seeing grass, as well as giving guests the option to step outside for a minute that I preferred.

The reason why I'm torn has something to do with what randella said - I live and work in Manhattan and I'm not sure if I'd like to have a little less asphalt jungle and a little more beautiful scenery. I've actually been to weddings at both the Harrison House and the Yale Club and had fun at both (never went to one at Carlyle but the place looked interesting to me). Just wanted to know what other people's opinions were. I think I'd want my guests to be able to stay overnight at the same place as the reception, so that is why I'm leaning more to Harrison House or Yale Club over Carlyle, but I haven't ruled Carlyle out completely yet.

I wanted the same exact things as you-- city wedding, hotel, etc... and if LI- hotel..
Eventually I threw all my 'requirements' out the window and just booked the place I liked the best..
Schlepping on the LIRR is not the most fun-- but, whatever- it's only bad at the beginning and the end-- I am out there every weekend now!

My wedding was at the Yale Club so I dont have an unbiased opinion on that.
Ive been to a wedding at Harrison House which was very nice.
I think they are totally different places so its almost impossible to compare.

I'd say go with whichever place- that when you walk into it- you know you want to get married there..
For me, I found I wanted outdoor space and you get a little more for your money on LI- even at the higher-end places.. You just need to do your research and make the best decision for you and your fiance.

Okay , well if you see to the left where I am getting married at, you'll know I am not unbiased, as well. However, I could help by letting you know why I chose the Harrison house: 1. I wanted a place where my friends and family could drink and not have to have a designated driver (meaning, a place that had a hotel) 2. Some of the best weddings I've been to have after parties, the harrison house's pub can stay open til 3am, and that was a major plus. 3. the whole house reminded me of an era that I think I should've been born into, with people floating from room to room for the cocktail hour, sitting on couches by the fire, etc. 4. I liked that OOT guests were close enough to the airport/ LIRR that they wouldn't have to drive very far. 5. Even though I am having a winter wedding, when I pull through the gates, I just get completely swept away with the grounds and the look of the House.
These are all JMO, but they are the reasons I went with them. Hope it helps!

I looked at both NYC and LI places too, including the YC and Harrison House, and I had a lot of the same concerns as Randella about outdoor space, etc. I wound up going with Le Parker Meridien on 57th because of its proximity to Central Park, where I plan to take pics before the ceremony, and its great view of the park from the ballroom. FH and I spend a lot of time in the park, and I felt it was appropriate that we get married somewhere close to it, and that way, we will have our city wedding with some 'green' photos! Hope that helps!
You do get more for your money at most LI, places, though-- that's definitely a consideration!

Thanks for all the comments! My observations are that the YC does have a really nice ballroom (a little nicer than HH) but the HH itself is just really, really pretty and it does seem to have nicer cocktail hour rooms (although I did like the rooftop terrace for cocktails) and the pub is another plus along with those gorgeous grounds. My mother seems to really like the Harrison House more than the Yale Club and has been putting some subtle influences on me there, too. It's such a tough decision - like Sonicstef said, they're both really different!

well i'm not giving an unbiased opinion either but i just loved the ceremony room at carlyle and i love the ballroom with all the windows..i've heard wonderful things about harrison house though

I am also not unbiased and I like HH - I'm a scenery person. YC and the Carlyle are nice too.
