Has anybody been to Sicily?

Has anybody been to Sicily?

Thinking about going for our honeymoon but NOT going on a tour....

Any suggestions? We know we will head to the southern-most part to see Santa Croce (where FH's family is from), and want to spend some time in Taormina and Palermo....

Anything else that is good? And whether we will be lost not speaking ANY Italian!

TIA!

my family is from there so we go all the time... you should try the other side of the island too, like agrigento... nice beaches.
yes you will be somewhat lost not speaking italian :(
sicily is not as touristy as rome, venice, etc, so a lot of people do not speak english.

we are kinda into it not being touristy....

do you think if we started taking lessons we'd catch on enough to not look totally foolish?

i wanted to do a tour but FH is against it (right now)

heya girls:

my mom is from a town outside of palermo called partinico. my dad is from a town outside of agrigento called caltabellotta. anyone familiar with those?

honestly i love siciliy but i have always stayed with relatives and had people taking me everywhere, mostly to the beach and some nightclubs. i truly dont know how it would be to go on my own as a honeymoon. maybe if you get a rentacar it would be better so you can drive to the beach?

I always stay with relatives also and I speak the language. It's definitely not as touristy as other places in Italy but I've had friends go there that didn't speak italian and did ok.

It really is so beautiful, if you have the opportunity to go you really should.

I have always stayed with family and have been taken around also,,we mostly spent the days at the beach...
