My brother ghost-wrote a book for a famous author...I had pieces of research published that I did for my thesis (chapters of larger books), but not a whole book...I used to write for fun, but I think it would be very difficult to make a living off of it...

I didn't, but my aunt is a published mystery writer and her son is a published writer too. I think she started out getting her short mysteries published in magazines like 'Womans Day'. It took a while for her to get published, she had many friends who wrote books and were never published. She also joined the club here in NYC The Mysteries Writer's Club Of America now she is a board member on the comitee, it gave her a lot of exposer. Her first book was 'The Night The Pennington's Vanished' young adult mystery. She actually goes around to diffenrt schools here in NYC to tell students how to become a published writer.
