Do you mean without the sitdown dinner part of it? Just the cocktail hour?

Re: has anyone....
Funny you ask because we were just talking about this at work. I've never been, but a couple of the ladies I work with have and honestly they said they were very disappointed. There was no mention of it on the invite so they didn't eat beforehand and ending up leaving starving. I would say that if you go that route definitely let it be known. HTH

I've had this exact experience. There was no mention of the reception being a 'cocktail hour reception', and there definitely wasn't enough food to go aroundl they actually ran out in the first hour. I think the cocktail hour reception is a great idea, but you have to tell your guests in advance so they know what to expect, and also make sure that the hall had plenty of food for everyone throughout the reception. Also, there wasn't enough seating for everyone, which I think is part of the whole thing (like some people are supposed to be up and mingling), but it just didn't work out well. I think you should always have enough seating for everyone - my Mom (and the group I was with) ended up having to stand, and she has a bad back and was in pain.

I did once, at my cousins wedding in South Carolina. It was nice, but being from New York it was a little disappointing. I think that New Yorkers tend to expect the big huge production.

According to Miss Manners (who I really really like), if you have an event during mealtime, you need to provide a meal. For example, if you start the wedding at 1 or 6, I think it gives people enough time to grab something to eat before the ceremony. Although, with the way CH are on Long Island, I don't think you really need the actual meal! Either way, I think that your card should say 'ceremony, followed by a cocktail/ h'ors d'ourves reception'
I was really annoyed a few months ago when I went to a work function with FH and it was cocktails only, during dinner time, and nothing was said about it on the invitation. I had eaten light all day with the hopes of shoving my face because it was at a fancy country club. I was so disappointed! What was even worse, was that nearly all the food was meat, which I don't eat! I just really hate going to an event thinking I'm going to be fed and then having to eat a cheese sandwich when I get home!
Edited to say: aren't I classy, shoving my face at the country club?
