has anyone changed their door themselves?

DH claims to be handy...but I have never seen him do anything of this magnitude...and I don't want to have a mess on our hands...

we have sliding patio doors...but I would like to get french doors...

do you think it is too much to bite off?

Re: has anyone changed their door themselves?

A friend of mine just replaced their front door and they were saying that the installation was almost as much as the door itself! But if it's a door to the outside, we all agreed that it's worth every penny to have the door fit right and seal properly.

We've done just about everything in our place ourselves, but won't be messing with the doors ourselves. JMO though

I've helped my father install sliding doors and a side door, but he hired guys to do their entrance double doors.

My FH and I have installed storm doors and windows with no problem.

DH is convinced that he can do it himself (he built a house in Arizona with friends)

I'm a little nervous...theres still time to talk him out of it though

when you say 'himself', do you mean with himself and friends or himself as in all by his lonesome?

Re: has anyone changed their door themselves?

We just had a new front door put in and it was a lot of work! Of course they were in the middle of installing it when the blackout hit, but even without that there is no way that my DH would have been able to do it himself. And he is pretty handy!

I looked at the instructions and all I can say is wow!!! Way too confusing.

Good luck Erica!! Keep trying to talk him into having someone else do it. Save yourself some grief!!!

Erica,

Some time ago, I posted before and after pics of the french doors we put in to replace the old sliding glass doors we had. Here's the link I think:

old post

We purchase the doors already in the jamb, and hubby and his friend spent the entire day doing it. I can tell you they did a wonderful job, but it was way more than any of us thought it would be. It is definitely a job for 2 or more people.

If it's just you and DH, I would think twice. I'm not saying you both couldn't do it, but it is one tough job. The old frame was inside the moldings of the house, so they had to tear up the shingles to get it out. Teh doors were super heavy and it took a long time to shim them so they hung right and opened and closed with out sticking.

Whatever you decide, good luck. I love my french doors.....
