Has anyone else's engagement shoot gotten them worried about their photographer?

Has anyone else's engagement shoot gotten them worried about their photographer?

I'm using a photographer who is very popular on this board and after having my engagement shoot with him, I am discouraged. He admitted the lighting was bad at the time of the shoot, but I realized that since it's his own studio that he shoots in all the time, shouldn't he get it straight? So many girls on this board have posted such nice engagement pics and been so happy with them, I am wondering if anyone else didn't have such a great experience AND what did they do about it (if anything)!

Anyway, we have another photog's pics of us from a recent wedding to compare and there is a big difference that my friends and family are noticing. The seated pics we took aren't his advertised photojournalistic style so the pics from this shoot are nothing like what we expected. We even have pics from friends with the EXACT same camera as our photog and they look just as good if not better.

We were so excited and now this shoot has soured that. I don't know whether it's possible that he is just not good at posed pics, though most weddings have their fair share of those, or whether he kind of just blew through the shoot, but what is for sure is that the outcome was not favorable and I don't have as good of an impression anymore. It's upsetting to think I was done with photography and now have to deal with this with only 3 months to go!

Why not tell him your feelings on the pics and have him do them again. Obviously if you have seen nice e-pics from the same person, then this is just a one-time situation. Nobody is perfect. Sometimes peopel have a bad day. If he is willing to do them over and you come out with better pics, then there isn't a problem.

Maybe he just had a bad day - I would agree with CB and see if he'll do them over.

I totally agree i would talk to them if you are really unhappy with them and maybe he will do the shoot again.

Yeah but you don;t want him to have another bad day on your wedding day. Definetely talk to him though. This is the first time you are working with him....he should have done better work

I would definately tell him that you aren't happy with the egagement shots and would like to do them over. I would have them done over before you give any more $$. This is his profession and bad lighting in a studio is no excuse. He is a professional and should know these things!

That brings up a good point. I'm sorry to say I don't know much about photography BUT is poor lighting something to just ignore? By his suggesting that we can edit the photos to improve the lighting, I feel like, can you get it right the first time? Isnt lighting something within his control or is this somehow excusable?

He admitted it and all kinds of people from grandma to cousin Suzie noticed they were not so hot. That can't be good.

good advice above... but i'd be weary b/c you can't reshoot your wedding day...

what does it say in your contract? is there another photographer with this company that may shoot your wedding?

you should be 100% confident with your photographer. it's one of the most important aspects imo.

I would be very uspet by the suggestion that we can 'edit' the photos because the lighting was poor. There should have been an offer to reshoot the whole session. I am getting a 'shady' feeling.

Actually, most photos done by photographers are edited in one way or another and the Brides don't even know it. My Fh's brother was a photography buff so I know that. Had the photograper fixed them before sending the proofs, you would never had known it.

I actually had the same problem and didn't want to have to worry about it on my wedding day. Pictures are the only thing you have after. I did end up switching my photographer after my engagement shoot with my original photograher.

Our e-pics made us so excited for wedding pics and gave us an added confidence in our photographer ( Artisan ).

My sugestion is to go talk to your photographer immediately about your concerns. Make sure they understand exactly what you see wrong with the pics and discuss with you how they plan to correct it specifically.

Do you have time to do an additional e-shoot? They really should offer you another session.

I would DEFINITELY address this. Was your session ina studio? If so, there is NO excuse at all for'poor lighting'...even if it was an outdoor shoot a good photogrpaher will know how to take great picturesin any light. Een if he is 'just bad at posed photos' there are a LOT of posed photos at the wedding, you want someone who can do everything. Who is shooting your wedding? Is it the owner? Is it the lead photogrpaher? Tell him you're upset. The light on a location shoot (like your wedding!!!!) is always somewhat unpredicatble but a good photographer will know how to meter the light and use supplemental lighting and the right fi;m to get it right! I don't think I agree with asking him to do the engagement shoot over. He'll only get ONE chance to get your wedding right. I'd talk to him about it, but I'd probably cancel. Any deposit you already spent and would lose is not worth having crappy pictures for a lifetime. you WILL regret it if your wedding day pics come out as bad as your e-pics. Find out if you can cancel. if he doesn't let you, you'll have a good chance of getting your $$ bac in small claims court if you can show that the proofs you got form your e-shoot did not match the quality of the samples you were shown! Good luck!

I' been studying photogrpahy for a few years, too. And its ture no photo is the truth, everything is 'edited' in some way, but one thing is unchanged. if you have a bad negative, you're going to have a bad print..it's as simple as that..you can edit all you want, but a photo is as good as its negative. if you have a great negaitve, yu'll have a great print, provided it's printed well. You can't have anything that's not in the negative and a professional photographer should know how to get crips, beautful negatives the first time.

ETA: Even if this guy is a miracel worked with retouching the proofs, which I doubt..and it dones;t exist because you just NEED a good neg, do you really want bad negs? If you are getting the negs as part of your package, do you really want ones you won't be able to reprint easily? if you bring good negs to the photo shop they can print them very well pretty cheaply and efficiently, if you bring bad negs, most people don't have the expertise to fix them (if they can be fixed), and it will take a lot of time (in other words $$$ to get them right). Also, it's very easy to make a good print from a good negative, VERY hard or imposisble to make a good print from a bad negative...if this photographer doenst tkae enough pride in his work to do something other than blame bad lighting, do you think he's going to invest the time needed to turn those bad negatives into semi decent prints? Just my .02!
