I've been 4 times with my dad (once my best friend / MOH came along too) and just booked our first trip together for me and DH yesterday, actually!

I'd be happy to share lots of ideas with you, but it does begin with...

1) where are you flying into? Shannon or Dublin?
2) how long are you staying?
3) will you be renting a car?

I know the west coast way better than the east coast, but I could still give you lots of ideas if you'd like.

Also, Marissa (julesbrf) went there as part of her HM so you might want to ask her about it since she'll have the more 'romantic' type trip outlined already (or at least more grownup trip lol... since I've never been without my dad yet).

It's amazing there!

Re: Has anyone ever been to Ireland?

I have been to Ireland with a group and I loved it! I would say def go there for a honeymoon. A couple places I would recommend to visit (more like sightseeing) are: the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney castle (where you can kiss the Blarney Stone), Waterford (go to the Waterford crystal factory, so cool!) and the Guinness Factory (you get to drink a glass of Guinness while sitting above Ireland and looking at the beautiful scenery!). Ireland is so green and gorgeous!

The actual counties we went to were Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Galway and Waterford but I can't tell you which spots are in each county because they all run together, sorry! I would say if you are interested, get an Ireland book from a library and write down some places you'd be interested in going or seeing and that should help a lot. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I went a few years ago with my sister, BIL, and his family. We pretty much traveled around the whole country in a circle and mostly stayed with family or at B&Bs. Def check out Bunratty Castle! We had a great time there.

I went a few years ago. Rented a car and drove around the country staying in Band B's...was amazing!

I went to the 'regular' tourst spots but enjoyed the places 'off the beaten path' so much better. check out the Aran Islands on the west coast...the ferry is near a really neat town called Doolin which has the best pub music and local scene. Can rent bicycles on Inishmore and spend a nice day on this really peaceful island...\\\

I also loved the cliffs of mohr and bunratty castle as well as Galway..can't miss galway!

Anyway...a great place for a honeymoon..no need for group tour..it totally do-able on your own with a car...

I can chose either one. We are staying 6 days and car rental is included.

Re: Has anyone ever been to Ireland?

I've never been but def YES!

It looks like a beautiful country!

We're flying into Dublin then staying a night there, probably in a hostel. Then the next day we're renting a car and driving down the coastline to County Wexford, specifically to the Town of Rosslare which is a port town. Spend a night there at a B&B then the next day take a Ferry to Pembroke, England. That's a four hour ferry ride and it's only about $50US!! Then from Pembroke you can take a train to London; that's uber cheap as well. Less than $50US. Not sure how long that train ride is. We had to stop our HM research at that point on Sunday because we had family coming over. Hehe.

And as a surprise to FI -shhhhh!- I'm going to arrange for us to make a pit stop on the drive the Rosslare to play a round of golf. He's a avid golfer and Ireland has some of THE best golf courses in the world. Along the route we're taking to Rosslare there are probably a good 3-4 courses that are in the Top 100 Golf Courses in the world. I'm SO psyched to surprise him with this!!!

GL!! And let me know if you want to compare notes. I'm a crazy researcher!

Re: Has anyone ever been to Ireland?

One quick thing about renting a car in ireland. They have an insurance rider than you must purchase or show proof of coverage that almost doubles the cost of the rental car if you do not have the proof. Also, if you can't drive a stick and have to rent an automatic, it can be very expensive.

My dad told me the other day that the only credit cards that cover an Ireland rental car are World Perks Visas from Bank of America. I'm having a very difficult time getting them to send me the letter, but I'm going to keep fighting with them for it because it's a difference between $260 and $440 for the week! Pretty nuts!

My dad's house is in County Clare, close to Ennis -- about 40 minutes north of Shannon Airport. When we go, we spend a lot of time in the Burren (which is like a national park region) since it's so close, and often go to Galway and in Limerick since they're each only about 45 minutes away. The whole trip feels like a real vacation to me just because I don't get caught up in the whole hustle and bustle of city life there. I don't mind getting stuck behind a large herd of sheep driving places. It's not like that anymore if you're driving to major cities since they have many bi-ways now that weren't there the first time I went, but on side roads it can still happen.

I love the west coast. I love to go up to Kylemore Abby where every picture you take looks like it's out of a magazine.

(BTW: This picture is 5 years old and I'm 40 lbs lighter now... just sayin'...)

I love going to the Avoca woolen mills, and to the Rock of Cashel, and driving the ring of Kerry. Those are all 'west coast' activities, though. We went to Waterford and toured the factory once (it's in the southeast - very far) and it was wonderful and totally worth the drive. I don't know if we'll go this trip. Cork is really beautiful too. I haven't spent enough time in Dublin to really give you any advice on it, but it sounds like others have, so that's good.

Either way, you'll have an amazing trip.

Yes! I have been there but it seems as if many girls have covered the basics of a trip to Ireland so I won't echo their sentiments. We stayed in Dublin but we drove the 4 hours out to the Cliffs of Moher. The west coast is BEAUTIFUL, I would love to go back one day. Ireland is an incredibly beautiful country and we encountered so many friendly and helpful people.

Let me know if you have any questions!

I would LOVE to see the Cliffs of Moher but unfortunately it's in the opposite direction of our travels! And so is Ring of Kerry, right? We'll be in Dublin working our way south along the coast.

It's funny how different a trip you can have depending on what coast you start on! The Cliffs of Moher are literally (he's timed it) 15 minutes from my dad's house in Clare.

It was a four-hour drive from Dublin to the Cliffs, pretty much a straight drive from east to west.

And Sandra, I'm coming to stay in your dad's place one of these days. Would LOVE to get back to Ireland and see more of the west coast!

I can't wait to go there one day! FH's family lives in Limerick and Mayo so I'm hoping sometime in the next few years (maybe after the wedding) we can plan a family trip there.

I've never been there, was supposed to go for the Irish Dance Worlds Competition back in 2002.. but there was a hoof and mouth outbreak and 9/11 just happened and we decided not to go.

but I'm told its a great place to honeymoon!!! I'd say go for it!

Re: Has anyone ever been to Ireland?

You cant tour the waterford factory anymore they are closed...we drove there to find that out. Also rent your car online here it would be 1/10 the price...it cost us $600 to rent a car for 2 days and make sure to get an automatic and if possible gps. its pretty simple to get around with a map and the round abouts are fun.
