Has anyone ever had a swollen jaw before?

I went to the Dr to get a second opinion on whether or not I should get sinus surgery and I thought I had an ear infection but he tells me I have a very swollen jaw. Has anyone every had this? He tells me he isn't sure why I have it just to eat soft foods or liquids only and put heat on it and take asprin.

How long does this last?

is it TMJ. I never got swollen, but it used to act up when I was stressed, chewed gum alot (while writting school papers, ate hard foods. Got it after I wore braces.

Thank you stacy! It is weird it only bothers me when I touch my ear area, sleep on that side, chew or yawn - but it doesn't hurt to talk. I just can't figure out how I got it

could it be wisdom tooth or ear infection???

Do you grind your teeth or clench your jaw a lot? I used to clench my jaw when I get stressed and didn't even realize it til DH pointed it out to me. That could cause it also. I hope you feel better.

No jenny I really don't know - he didn't call it TMJ he just said an inflammed and swollen jaw - and it would go away in a few days or a week and not to worry about it - it is just uncomfortable

The guy I went to was an ENT (ear, nose throat) and he said my ears look perfect the one ear isn't the problem. He asked if I had bit down hard on something - he said my teeth didn't show signs of grinding - and I already had all four of my wisdom teeth out 8 or 9 years ago

Just the right side around the ear area - which is why I thought it was an ear infection - but my mom noticed the area was puffy and looked in my ear (she used to be a nurse) and says NOT the ear so

Maybe you have tmj? That is what I have- I always thought it was my ears because that is what it feels like but it isn't.

It does sound like tmj- it feels like an earache. I wake up sometimes because of the pain, and then I guess it relaxes because the pain goes away.

Any toothaches recently?

Have you been to your regular doctor? Have you considered a dentist?
I went through this once and it was cellulitis. I ended up having to go through some serious oral surgery.

My girlfriend just went through this as well and it turned out to be a bacterial infection.

No my teeth feel fine - I am pretty lucky with my teeth the only thing I have ever needed done was to have my wisdom teeth removed - I have never had a cavity - but they feel good - actually I have an apt on tues for my regular dentist apt.

Yes. It could be teo things....TMJ or a swelling irritation in your molars. I would get a 2nd opinion though, b/c both ailments are very curable.
