Has anyone ever made Fondue?
I've got a fondue set and I was thinking of using it for the first time at my party saturday. Some of the people are alctose intolerant, so i thought I'd use dark chocolate. Do you use the kind you make lollipos with, or melt a chocolate bar, or what? And what do you put in the little cups? Is that where you put the fruit, or is that for each individual person? THANKS!

Re: Has anyone ever made Fondue?
The little cups are for the dipping foods...in your case, you'd put strawberries, maybe banana, etc. Can't help you wih the chocolate - I've only done cheese - but my guess is that you'd use the melting chocolate...stuff you use for lollipops and such.
Have fun!

Re: Has anyone ever made Fondue?
This is for kids, but I'm sure it's for everyone:Chocolate Fondue
The first chocolate fondue was made with Swiss Toblerone chocolate and became a companion to Swiss cheese fondue. For the sweetest dipping, use sweet German chocolate; if your kids like a slightly bittersweet chocolate, use semisweet chips.
Big Dippers
12 ounces sweet German chocolate, semisweet chocolate chips, or Toblerone chocolate
1 cup light cream or half and half
1 tsp. vanilla extract
KIDS' COOKING SKILLS: Use this recipe to teach your kids how to melt chocolate, measure liquids, and slice fruit.
1. Before melting the chocolate, prepare the fruit dippers. Wash and hull the strawberries (but leave them whole), slice the apples, peel and slice kiwis and peel and chop the pineapple (parents only). Cut the pound cake into cubes and leave the marshmallows whole. Arrange all the fruit, cake and marshmallows on a large platter. Squirt lemon juice on the apples and bananas to keep them from browning. Cover the platter and set it aside.
2. To prepare the fondue, ask your kids to break the chocolate squares into pieces and drop them into a saucepan. Add the light cream or half and half and melt over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the chocolate is smooth. Add the vanilla extract and stir.
3. Transfer the chocolate sauce to a fondue pot (for little kids, you can pour the sauce into a small bowl or ramekin). Use a fondue fork to spear the fruit and sweets, then dip in the chocolate (use toothpicks if the kids are dipping into a small bowl). Serves 8 to 10.
TIP: The addition of cream prevents the chocolate sauce from turning lumpy. The chef should stir the chocolate and cream together until smooth.
BIG DIPPERS
Choose your family's favorite fruits and sweets and design a colorful platter to serve with your pot of chocolate fondue. Here are some classic dippers:
•Banana slices
• Pineapple chunks
• Whole strawberries
• Apple slices
• Kiwifruit
• Star fruit
• Pear slices
• Orange sections
• Pound cake pieces
• Marshmallows
• Shortbread fingers

Re: Has anyone ever made Fondue?
I'd reccomend 'pre-melting' the chocolate in a pan on your stove then transferring the melted chocolate to your fondue pot. It saves a lot of time - it takes forever for the chocolate to melt otherwise. Once it's melted, the flame under the fondue pot will keep it hot.

Re: Has anyone ever made Fondue?
2 big bars of Hershey's chocolate1/2 cup of milk or cream
and if you want... some Bailey's or Grand Marnier or any other alcohol...
Also did a pizza one... spaghetti sauce, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, italian seasonings... dip with garlic bread and pillsbury breadsticks...yummy!
Definitely melt it all together in a pot and then transfer it to the fondue set.
