Has anyone ever removed paneling? What did you do with the walls after?

Has anyone ever removed paneling? What did you do with the walls after?

The previous owners of our home must've had stock in wood paneling b/c it's everywhere! We took down the paneling in the hallway upstairs (it was just glued on) but now we're having trouble removing all the glue. We want to paint it and avoid having to re-sheetrock the whole thing. So we're trying to sand the hell out of the walls to get the glue off. Anyone have any suggestions????

Im interested too, the house that we are buying has panneling GALORE. i mean its even in the kitchen! YUCK!! they made closets out of panneling.. Did panneling look good in the 60s and 70s or was it the after affect from all the drugs that made them do that???

I would say the house im buying is probably about 75% panneled.. I figured we would need to sheet rock the whole thing..

LOL! I have panelling in my kitchen too! AND on the back of the bathroom door upstairs to match the rest of the hallway. YUCK.

Although since it seems that a lot of us are installing/refinishing wood floors, probably 30 years from now new homeowners will be like, 'Ugh! They have wood floors everywhere!'

if the sheetrock is still in good shape you can try and sand down the glue spots. If the sanding isnt doing anything, you may have to cut out the glue spots and replace the sheet rock in those places, if you do not want to replce all of the sheet rock.

You will probely have to spackle the spots where you sanded and give the walls a couple of coats of good primer before you paint.

Good Luck!!

If there is sheetrock underneath, then you're in luck.. Like Lisa said, sand down the glue spots.. or if necessary replace the boards..

My parents house is a victim of excessive paneling from previous owners. Two rooms are complete paneling. We took it down recently in one room. Fortunately the walls were in pretty good shape. The guy didn't use too much glue mostly nails. We scraped off the glue, sanding is probably quicker and made sure to spackle any of the little holes the nails left. Then used a primer and a paint. I must say the room is so much brighter. It is alot more work than what we thought it would be.

Be careful when you take it down. My BIL's house had the electric tacked to the underside of the paneling and somehow the engineers missed this! Big mess!

Ive seen some room makeovers where they paint the panelling and it looks like a cool effect. Maybe try that in one room before going crazy trying to take it down?

we painted the paneling in the craft room only because we had taken down one piece of the paneling and saw the mess underneath and decided it wasnt necessary to go through that expence.

My parents did this for one of the rooms. They ended up covering up stuff with Wallpaper...

my mom has painted paneling that she herself put up in the 60s...

in the kitchen it was a pee yellow...and she painted it a country blue (defintiely her style...not so much mine) - and stencil...

this is the only picture I seem to have on shutterfly...but you can see it in the background....

she also painted the paneling in the den pink...sounds weird and as much as I don't like pink...it doesn't look too bad...its a every light dusty rose...

sorry no pic...

We had to remove paneling in two rooms, but neither one was a full wall. The last owners had panelling on the wall by the stairs. This wall we had to replace with sheet rock, the other panelling they stuck on with glue somehow and we had to sand it and re-spackle that.

Removing paneling might be risky because you NEVER know what's underneath it, ya know?

Wow! Thanks to all for the tips. We should start our own home improvement show...

I've seen painted paneling and it can look nice. I believe they even sell a filler for it, so you can acheive a smooth wall if you don't want to take it down.

We just recently removed paneling from our family room (it wasn't standard paneling) and we're in the process of drywalling. It actually worked out better because we're re-wiring the room (speaker, electrical, cable) while we're at it.

We took down the paneling in our DR to find 1/2 the wall wallpapered and 1/2 with cedar paneling the best part was the gap between the two where a chair rail had once been. So it was new sheetrock for us. We painted the paneling in the Den. It came out fine.

I was going to mention just painting over it. It comes out pretty cool. Please don't mind the dog or the twizzlers - LOL

Also the color has since changed to a warm vanilla...

ETA - I had to resize the pic so I don't know if you can see it that well. Sorry!

Seems as if people already touched up upon the painting right over it. My parents did that in ont h of bedrooms, and honestly, it looks great in a pale yellow color!

We also removed paneling and thankfully it was all nailed in, so we had good sheetrock underneath to work with.

But another option my parents did and worked out well is to simply by the thinnest sheetrock (1/4-inch) and put it up right over the old sheetrock. This eliminates the need to take down the old stuff and cuts right to the case if you have to end up sheetrocking!
