Has anyone ever removed paneling? What did you do with the walls after?
Original post by dietzer
The previous owners of our home must've had stock in wood paneling b/c it's everywhere! We took down the paneling in the hallway upstairs (it was just glued on) but now we're having trouble removing all the glue. We want to paint it and avoid having to re-sheetrock the whole thing. So we're trying to sand the hell out of the walls to get the glue off. Anyone have any suggestions????

All the walls in my apartment are panelling. In the 60's the paneling in the bedroom and living room were brown and in the computer room it was black and white. Now the living room is blue and light grey and the computer room is beige.
The only thing I don't like about painting panelling, is the actual painting. It took so long, and you have to get into all the grooves and crevises. Other than that, i don't think it looks too bad.
In the spring Danielle and I are getting new carpeting(her brother in law installs carpet), and we are going to repaint the area where the mural is. That is going to be our bedroom. We are going to be putting up a wall to seperate that room from the rest of the apartment. Right now it is a studio. We are also going to paint the area where my bed is now and make that the dining room. Not sure of the colors yet. Something warm though...I was thinking of a brick red with a white ceiling for the bedroom....we will see.

By the way - panelling is coming back into fashion. (Not the plastic - looks-like-wood-kind) but the real wood kind. So before you change it, you might want to wait it out and see if you can vogue it up a bit.

We have paneling all over our house. We painted the paneling in our den it took like 5 coats of paint. We are planning on ripping down the paneling in the LR, DR and hallway. We are going to put in new sheetrock if needed. (All after the wedding)
