Has anyone ever traveled with an expired passport?

Has anyone ever traveled with an expired passport?

Ok we are going on a cruise in the beginning of July and I just noticed that DH's passport expires next month. I know that he could probably do it now by mail but i'm nervous about that, even though it takes 4-6 weeks.

My question is can he travel with an expired passport? We are going on a carnival cruise to puerto rico and the virgin islands. I went on carnival's website and unless i'm reading it wrong he can go with and expired passport as long as it hasn't been expired for more than 10 years, I called carnival and they said the same thing. So this morning i Called my travel agent to double check and she tells me to have him bring his original Birth certificate and drivers license. She also said he should get his passport renewed even though he could still bring his expired one. I don't know who to believe now.

If you are staying in US territories then I am sure that a Birth Certificate and D.L are okay. A passport is the best thing to carry when you travel though.

Ok if you cant travel with an expired passport then why would carnival print this on their website:

Proper travel documentation is the responsibility of the guest and is required at embarkation and throughout the cruise. Guests traveling without proper documentation will not be allowed to board the vessel, and will not be refunded the cruise fare.

Documents must be presented at the time of embarkation. The following requirements are for all sailings, excluding Europe.

United States citizens need at least one of the following:

- A passport (valid or expired for less than 10 years).
- An original birth certificate and photo I.D.
- A state-issued certified copy of a birth certificate from the Department of Health and Vital Statistics and photo I.D.
- Original naturalization papers.

You don't need a passport to go to any of those places anyway. Like the other girls said, all you need is a birth certificate and driver's license...so why would you even bother dealing with the expired license?

Somes rules change and god forbid they want the passport a valid one, and we don't have it renewed...I just want to travel with no worries...

I'd do the expedited service then - it's 2 weeks and you're guaranteed to have the passport back. Cost is $60 but IMO it's worth the peace of mind it provides.

How far in advance can he apply to renew his passport...cuz it expires next month...does he have to wait until it expires??? or can he do it now?

I believe you can travel with an expired passport to a place where a passport is not required.

For example... the Bahamas requires a birth certificate and a drivers licence.

But you can substitute this with an expired passport (no more than two years expired).

I believe this to be the case. I read it on Delta's website. But don't hold me to this info... check it out for yourself.

I elected to just get my passport renewed and paid the extra $60 buks so there would be no issues.

I am willing to pay the extra 60 bucks too. Where do I go to do this and can I do this month before the expiration date?

I could kill DH...he can be so careless sometimes!!!!!!!!

call your local post office - depending on how large it is, they may only do passports on certain days/times/etc. I know this was the case w/ my post office.

I'm at the website right now and I'm reading the part for expedited service.

Now it's 67 dollars for the regular fee and in addition to that I'd have to pay another 60 ... making it a total of 127 right?

It says that the total fees for a normal Passport are $97. I would assume that you have to pay the $97 and then add the $60 equalling $157. I am just guessing that is how it would work.

It might be more helpful for you to call or visit your local postoffice and ask them. They will know the answer.
