Has anyone experienced heartburn????

OH my God....I thought I was going to die last night. I have to call the doctor today b/c if I ever get that again - I have to know what you can do to prevent it or what I can do if I ever get it again.
I was very close to tears - has anyone else experienced it? I felt like I was having a heart attack -

I would get it checked out. If it is defintely heart burn you can try liquid Maalox or the rolaids in pill form. The liquid works faster and coats the lining. But, I would make sure that was what it was first before just treating it as heartburn.

Re: Has anyone experienced heartburn????

I had terrible, terrible heartburn throughout most of my pregnancy. From about the time I started to show up until about 1 week after the baby's birth, the heartburn was HORRIBLE!!!

There's not too much that you can do for it. My doctors actually said I could take Pecid or Zantac, but I didn't want to take anything like that b/c of the baby.

Instead, I lived on Tums and drank MILK whenever it got really bad...this ensured that added bonus of calcium for the baby. Also, you might try eating bland foods and stay away from the spicy stuff that usually makes the heartburn worse!

Old wives tale (just thought I'd share) about heartburn is that the baby will be born with a lot of hair. In my son's case, it was true! LOL!

Claud -

therefore, was it heartburn? It's pain in between your breasts? Very strong pains?
As I said I have never experienced heartburn and wasn't sure what it was at first - it was the only thing I could come up with - my husband said it can't be heartburn being it was so painful - and he kept aksing me if it was burning and I said no - pain not burning -
What do you think?

Re: Claud -

I actually since I have been a kid had the same pains. I don't know about the link between this and pregnancy. Mine I think is from a reflux of the acid in my stomach. It is painful, not really burning. I have been chicken to go and check it out, I have been told this could also be gallbladder pains and I am too chicken to get that out if it is what is causing the pain. It might just be the reflux. Did the pain radiate down your arm? Did you feel flush/sweaty? That would be for a heart problem.

Re: Claud -

I dunno ladies...it sounds like what you (Junebride)are talking about is different from what I am talking about. I did not have PAIN...I had really bad HEARTBURN...burning, burping, discomfort after meals, discomfort if my tummy was empty, etc.
If you felt like you were having a heart attack than call your doctor!!! I am sorry I didn't read your post more carefully.

As for you ABC - go to your doctor too! If you do have acid reflux disease, there are new meds that can treat it and help repair the lining of your esophogus (sp?). I know potential surgery is scary, but you're not helping yourself by avoiding any treatment.

I hope you feel better soon!

Yes, it's heartburn -

I have spoken to a few people now and they all have said yes, heartburn can be pain not burning. I called the doctor and they told me I can take something for it.

Definitely go with what your doctor advises. I had heartburn for months and Tums didn't even work. My OB told me it was OK to take Pepcid and they worked great.
I don'r know if this makes you feel better now (probably not) but the heartburn stopped IMMEDIATELY after I had the baby.

Hang in there

Re: abc7077 & Junebride

ABC7077 - Definately see a doctor about the regular heartburn. Continual reflux can increase the incidence of eusophogeal cancer (I think it's a minor increase factor, not huge, but still not worth the risk). It can be treated with laproscopic surgery (that's with the tubes and cameras where they don't cut you open much) They do something to help close up the opening and reduce the reflux. Unfortunately, I have another condition that doesn't doesn't allow for the surgery so I have rather regular reflux that needs to be controlled with medication.

Junebride - yes it can hurt like the devil and may not be a burning feeling. In addition to Zantac which I take daily I keep the extra strength Tums (berry flavor is the best) on hand to quell occasional problems. Another 'home remedy' that I found worked for me was Applesauce. My reflux is due to a condition with my eusophogas and following surgery I thought I'd die it was so bad a couple of times - I kept the little school lunch containers of Applesauce handy because eating one of those really calmed the pain.

Other things they tell you to control the problem - do not wear tight clothing at the waist, eat small meals, don't lie down right after eating, elevate the head of your bed (put wood blocks under the legs) by 4-8 inches if it's a problem at night. Extra pillows are not as good because you tend to bend at the waist still which aggrevates the problem. Also, in addition to spicy foods watch out for chocolate, coffee and heavy greasy foods.

Re: abc7077 & Junebride

One other thing to add onto what Karen said about what not to do: I would have my last food of any kind for the night by 7 pm and I usually went to bed around 11-12 - nothing! It helped. Right after I had him, I was thrilled to be able to have something at 10pm LOL

The heartburn=hair is true in my case too. No one could believe how much hair Luke was born with - he has more that Derek!!! I pictured myself having a little baldie.

Re: Has anyone experienced heartburn????

I just want to warn those of you with heartburn... I too had heartburn when I was prego with DD and ate Tums w/ calcium like they were going out of style... 2 months after I had her I was back in the hospital with a calcium kidney stone. I know calcium is great for babies but the pain of a idney stone is WORSE than labor so if I could spare anyone that pain I would.
