Has anyone gone back to school to become a teacher?

I am thinking of doing this but I will have to go for a few years and won't even have my masters. I will probably be in my early 30's by the time I can my first teaching job.

Has anyone done this?

haha - just about everyone I know! don't worry about the age - the number of years of service required for retirement are around 30 so even if you're 32 when you start, you'll still be younger than corporate people at retirement age. Go for it!

I did!!! (and I'm well into my 30's )

I already had my BA (in interdisciplinary studies - basically no real major). When I turned 30 I began to realize I wanted to be doing something more with my life. After A LOT of thought I went back for my MA in elem. and special education. I took it slowly (worked FT) and I have FINALLY finished all of my classes (and happily have a 3.98 ) and I will student teach in the fall. I will be almost 35 when I am finished student teaching

I wanted to add that I'm not even planning on looking for a job right away (unless I'm lucky enough to get one through student teaching). We will begin TTC while (or after) student teaching and I plan to sub through pregnancy.

Many of my friends have, and I work in a college so I see lots of people doing the same thing. One thing I would be aware of--none of my friends who went back for social studies were unable to get jobs, after quitting their current jobs for student teaching. The ones that were were in a science field (my friend with Physics cert. had several offers) had an easier time getting a job, as well as those who went back for math. This is not an official sampling, but just what I have heard from friends!

I'm thinking about going back, and I'm 33. I'm finishing my BA at NYU now and will prbably start an MA or MS program after I gradaute in either English 7-12 or Reading Specialist. My cousin is a district superintendent in Suffolk so I plan on asking for a big favor when job time comes!

I am planning on going back for my MA as well. My undergrad is in Business and I am miserable. My mom is a teacher as well as many of my friends. I want to go back in January but I don't know if that is too realistic. What I am scared of is working FT, wanting to have a baby and going to school all at once

I completed my masters in advertising and PR (useless degree) back in may and am now going back for my masters in elementary education. Continuing to work full time building up my resume.
I will also enter the teaching field in my early 30's. Its just such a great degree to have in the back pocket for when we have children. I feel as though I may not be hired right away because there will be so many 20 somethings out there looking as well.

Everyone is making me feel better about this, thanks!!!

I guess my biggest problem right now is the money issue. We have so much out in student loans right now and the thought of taking out $20k more really scares me!

as my husband says, 'its an investment in our future - think of it as a new car' :)

somehow, I think I would prefer the car - haha!!

I am dying too. I need to get my act together and see what requirements I'll need to become a phys ed teacher.

That's what I want to do...teach phys ed!!

I'm sure it will be a lot easier for you. I have a degree in TV Production so I would have to take every class needed and get a second undergraduate degree. I would have to go back for 2-3 years full time.

If you have a degree in exercise science, you probably only have to take the required teaching classes.

I am in the same boat! I have a BS in communications, but want to teach elementary school age children. I have no idea how to even begin....I've searched on the internet the requirements to no avail. Can anyone tell me what I need to do?

I would contact a school you are thinking about attending (that's what I did). They help you with what you need. I looked at the NYS website and it confused the heck out of me. I contacted the school I wanted to go to and they told me what I needed to start.

I graduated with a degree in advertising, PR, and Communications...absolutely nothing to do with teaching. Fordham and Hunter (and I'm sure other colleges) have masters programs designed for people who have had no education experience. I took a year off from work and went back to school full time (from May 2002-May2003) got my masters in Teaching K-6 (at Fordham), and a was teaching by Sept 2003. You don't have to take undergrad classes first. There are plenty of masters programs out there designed for people like us :) Good Luck!
