Has anyone had a land versus school district dilemma?

Has anyone had a land versus school district dilemma?

DH and I are casually looking for a house.

Problem is, some of the districts that I really would love to get into, we would have a yard the size of my car.

On the other hand, in the districts that we could afford a really nice size piece of property, the districts are still very reputable, but not nearly as well rated as the other districts.

I guess it really boils down to a Nassau county versus western suffolk county thing.

Experience on both sides of this dilemma would be greatly appreciated?

IMO it's more important to look at the grammar schools verses the high schools because who knows what will happen in 10 15 years from now. Things change. There are areas with very good grammar schools that the high schools aren't rated as high.

That was our problem, too. We could've gotten a great house, with minimal work to be done to it, with a nice size piece of property, and in a good SD. However, we opted for a house that needs updating, with a smaller yard, but in an excellent SD (it's ranked very high in NYS and nationally). We just felt the resell value would be better (I hope we're right!)

I would look at the overall resell value on the home over the land or the district.
