The italian tradition is that if you get knives the person who got them for you has to give you a penny....it is a good luck thing... we registered for knives.

In the Jewish tradition, it's bad luck to receive knives as a wedding gift. In case someone should give knives, the bride should transform the exchange into a financial transaction by giving a penny or nominal sum for the knives.

and this
'Knives, scissors and all other types of utensils that are used for cutting things are not traditionally considered a good gift idea. Basically the idea of cutting or slicing things is does not promote good luck, or good karma. In fact, to the Chinese or in Latin America the gift of a knife as a gift would be interpreted as 'cutting off a friendship (or relationship).'

I never knew that, but I need a good carving knife, so I'd better get those pennies ready! What if it's for the Shower, not the wedding?

we're jewish, and my family wouldnt let me put knives on our registry. we did buy our friends their wusthof knife block set as a wedding gift (they are out of state, and giving cash is considered impersonal) but they arent jewish and it was one of the nicer things on their registry.

I was always told the BRIDE has to give the GIVER/GUEST of any knifes/scissors and what not a penny.. That way they aren't technically a gift, she paid something for them and then it is no longer bad luck.
Also at the shower the bride isn't supposed to use any Knives or scissors, that is also considered bad luck.. especially when opening gifts. (ex: cutting ribbons and string...big no no) She is supposed to rip and pull them and it is said (my my crazy old italian aunt) that how ever many times the string or ribbon breaks while the bride is trying to open the gift is the amount of kids she will have. Gotta love crazy italian wives tales.
Edited because I cant spell!!!

minor correction YOU have to give THEM a penny, so therefore you 'bought' your own knives

Yes, I am Italian and you can register for knives but if someone gives you knives at a shower you have to give them a penny so that you dont fight (superstition) and you cant use any knives to open your gifts at the shower
