Has anyone here shown their dog?

Has anyone here shown their dog?

I'm just wondering because I had decided against showing Satchmo. He was sold to us without a show contract because we were friends with one of the litter's co-owners and the breeder didn't think he would be show quality;most of his litter-mates went to show homes. As he has gotten older his markings have become quite striking and our friend (the litter co-owner) really wants us to show him, but I don't think she has the time or the expertise to help us out with that and the breeder (who has all the show experience) lives in New Jersey, so I had decided not to do it, and I have an appointment to get him neutered on Tuesday.

Well, today at Petsmart I had two encounters with breeders of sporting dogs (one bred Irish Setters and one bred German Short-Haired Pointers), both said Satchmo belonged in the show ring; he is an English Pointer, so these breeders know his breed well. Now, I'm starting to doubt my decision to not show him. I'm just wondering if anyone can give me insight on how much work it really is. I think I would like showing him, but I really want to get him neutered and all show dogs have to be intact. Anyone had experience with this?

Re: Has anyone here shown their dog?

do you have AOL? if you do FM me...... i know that soudsn weird, but you'll see....

i was going to show Lukin, but i refused to crop his ears, so that was out the window.... he is a good example of his breed. the perfect size. sleek & slender. most get a little chubby. Alot of minpin owners have told me he looks great.
Tink is so NOT up to her breed standard! ha! i never wouldve shown her anyway, she was born to be a pampered princess.
as for Dharma, she should've been shown but the owner before didnt want to so she got her fixed.

We're going to show Bama so I can tell you how it goes but he probably won't be in his first show for a few months and I'm sure you can't wait that long.
Are there any dog clubs near you that have handler classes? Maybe you could sign up for one and when you go, you can get some advice from the folks there about showing dogs and the work involved.....

Sorry I couldn't be more help

I have when Murphy was 6 months old to see how he would do. He came in 4th and I taled to alot of people at the show and felt it wasnt for me or my dog, so we had him neutered at that was the end of his 'career'.

Wow diamondgrlie, I didn't even know there were shows for dogs as young a 6 months. We really should have gotten connected with the local Pointer Club to find out how he would do in shows. But I'm concerned about not neutering him or neutering him late because of behaviors that can develop. I'm also completely uneducated about the whole showing process, but I think he has to go through special classes and we have to find a handler for him. I really should have investigated all this earlier. He's scheduled to be neutered tomorrow, so I guess we'll go through with it. I just feel guilty because we are friends with one of the litter co-owners and she wants us to show him. But she knew we bought him to be our pet and pet dogs are better off neutered.
