Has anyone quit a job without having another one lined up?
If so, how did everything work out? Would you do it again?
I'm highly considering it...but am scared at the same time!
Thanks!

No, but I was laid off (Arthur Andersen) and it was really scary. If you have a safety net right now (savings, someone who can help support you) you will probably be ok, but it could take you a week to a year to find a new job. It could be risky. I would just start aggressively searching for a new job.
I'm sorry things are so bad at your current job, but to me there was nothing scarier than not having a secured income.

I've seriously thought about it but never done it. In the end, there are just too many responsibilites to take such a bold move. My hurt pride or stress caused by coworkers is nothing compared to being forced to move, not be able to pay my bills, or hurt my credit with late payments.
That said, if I was in a truly abusive situation, I would consider it. But that's an extreme that doesn't come along often. If I could sue (and win) for the way I'm being treated, then it's time to go.
It's always better to have a back-up plan or another job to go to.

Yes and it was the worst decision of my life. I was out of work for 7 months and I had to rely on temp jobs (temp agencies are the WORST to deal with) By the end of the 7 months I would have taken any job that was offered to me because I was getting so desparate. I wound up settling for something that wasnt my ideal job and didnt stay more than a year and a half at that position.
The job market ***** right now. There are way more people looking for jobs then there are actual positions right now.
Please dont go down this road unless you can afford to be out of work for a while.and can afford to wait for the ideal position. Otherwise, secure a better job and then move on.

this seems like sound advice. I've never done it, although i've also been tempted to.
the only other question i have for you (if your situation is that unbearable)........would you be able to waitress or something along those lines in the meantime while looking for something else in your field?

Oh, I could have the best one ever - I got a job as a High School Math teacher my first year out of college. After the first year I decided I HATE IT, so I quit. No job lined up and I have a USELESS 4 year degree. So I bartended in NYC for 3 yers, SAVED up $30K & went back to college and got a degree in accounting. I've been at my firm 8 years, I am the 'second in command' and absolutely LOVE my job!!!!!!! It was hard, don't get me wrong, but I am happy. GOOD LUCK!!

I did it and it was not fun. Though I don't regret it because I HATED that job!!! I was out of work for almost 3 months. FH quit his job in January and has yet to find a job. With the wedding approaching I'm not sure if it's wise unless you are all saved up!!!

Yes because I truly hated what I was doing. It was really hard- I had no money. IF you're going to do this I would make sure you had enough money saved to last you for a few months. In my case I didn't work from Sept- Jan. I got a new job very quickly, but had to take a training class that didn't start until January. It was very difficult, I won't lie.

I did...I can't say I didn't have another one lined up because there were 'leads' to some, but nothing was definite...nothing except for the fact I had to get the heck out of there!
Would I do it again...if it was that job with that company...definitely!

I remember you always posting about how unhappy you are at your job. As soon as I saw this post I knew it would be you. I say life is way too short to be spending so much of your time unhappy!! As long as you won't get into trouble financially I say definitely do what makes you happy!!!

Re: Has anyone quit a job without having another one lined up?
not a good idea
it's much easier to get another job- while you are working
if you are out of work for too long- it's going to be hard to explain it
I would stick it out and look for something
my Dad always said not to quit your job until you have another one

Re: Has anyone quit a job without having another one lined up?
I've done it, but only because I was so absolutely miserable that I didn't even want to get out of bed in the morning. I dreaded every single day because I had one of the most miserable, racist jerks on the planet as a boss.
(It's probably not a surprise that this was at the IRS)
If you have enough money saved up to sustain you, then go right ahead. BUT it also depends on what field you're in and how fast you think you can find a job. Some fields are always looking, while others are not. Since you are still planning a wedding, I would just start sending out your resume to potential employers and see what happens. Worst case scenario you take off work early to go on interviews.
If you have any questions, feel free to FM me. I am the queen of job searching and interviews.
