I'm so annoyed by all the Cat in The Hat commercials that are NOT for the movie, that I wouldn't see it now anyway. But I did see ELF on Saturday and it was very funny!

Re: has anyone seen cat in the hat yet?
Out of 361 reader reviews on the NYTimes site, it got an average of 1.5 stars out of 5. Not one good review that I saw. Most people said they'd have given it no stars if it was an option.
Here's part of the NYTimes review:
The problem is that Mr. Myers, Mr. Welch and a squad of frantic screenwriters throw in disparate elements out of sheer laziness, concocting a grueling, chaotic stew of forced whimsy that utterly lacks imaginative integrity or visual spark. David Newman's score is clever and playful, but it is so catastrophically at odds with what is on the screen that it only makes matters worse, like a noisemaker wielded by a drunken birthday-party clown desperate to prevent his cranky audience from showing signs of boredom.
Mr. Myers's manic impishness, which has been quite diverting in other contexts, feels grating and inappropriate here. All he is doing is showing off, and it becomes wearisome in a hurry, especially when he tries to pander to the grown-ups with sketch-comedy parody, like an interminable infomercial sendup. I am tempted to say that this Cat should be tied up in a sack and drowned, but I wouldn't want to condone cruelty to animals, even metaphorically. Cruelty to classic works of children's literature is bad enough.
Here's one viewers review:
It's always a bad sign when the movie appears to have been designed more for product tie-ins that come with Happy Meals than with the goal of telling (or retelling in this case) a good story. In this case I'd suggest bypassing the movie and going directly for the tie-in. You'll get more lasting enjoyment from a cheap plastic toy, and it won't cost you 78 minutes that you'll never get back.
