Ditto. Hauppauge on the South side of the expressway isn't as great an area. If you're looking for an apartment complex Devonshire Hills is BEAUTIFUL. I lived there for a few years.

I went to Hauppauge High School, and now DH and I live in Hauppauge in a townhouse but it's Smithtown school district. Yes, though...it is a nice neighborhood. I personally like Smithtown better.

It is a nice area, FH grew up nearby in Dix Hills, and spent some time in Hauppauge. I heard the school district is pretty good also, HTH

Re: Hauppague?
I was raised in Hauppauge and went to school there. The school district is excellent, but stay on the North side. Not the South side of Hauppauge.
Taxes are high though, but some areas aren't so high. The neighborhood is nice too, I just moved after 25 yrs (which was sad) because my parents sold the house, but I will be coming back I hope.
Good Luck!!

Re: Hauppague?
This is an old thread, but I just saw all the Central Islip bashing on this site and thought I would put in my two cents. I have lived in Central Islip my entire life. My parents moved here in the 80s, the police department relocated my father during this program they were running to place an officer in every neighborhood. My parents make well over 6 figures, and just never wanted to leave. I live at the intersection of 111 and motor parkway. Yes there are bad sections of the town, but you are going to find that everywhere, money and wall to wall white people doesnt make an area 'desirable', because guess what, those areas generally have an extremely high drug problem. in the 20 years we have lived here we have had ONE problem, and lets face it, no matter where you live, if you live there for 20 years, you are going to have a problem. I went to school in Central Islip from kindergarten all the way through high school, I am now 20 years old and a teacher, do the math. I recieved a full ride to my choice college, based on my academics alone, I graduated high school with a 3.9 and scored a 1490 on the sat's. I love that when I go to the 'ghetto' I dont go into culture shock, I love that I was able to experience diversity in my everyday life instead of only on vacation. If you are a good parent, it shouldnt matter what your district is ranked, because your child will do well. As for being scared to walk around alone, give me a break, I hate to sound like a total b*tch, but I am a pretty girl, and go for a walk every night, and I have lived to talk about it. Please do not take offense to what I just said, just trying to defend my home, it has a bad rep, but everyone here is just doing the same thing you are, trying to get by. I think its a wonderful place for someone to buy their first home, its affordable right now, why not take advantage of that.

I dont believe anyone said that they were scared to walk around central islip.
its just my OPINION that Smithtown and Hauppauge SD's are better than CI. Im glad you had a great experience and love where you grew up.
